Why Runaway Truck Ramps Exist

May 6, 2019

runaway-truck-ramp.jpg

This is a video from westbound I-70 near Silverthorne, Colorado of a tractor trailer with brakes that have given out utilizing a runaway truck ramp to stop the vehicle from around 60- 65MPH. I did not expect to see the truck go that far up the ramp. So, the next time you're on a road trip through the mountains and your kid asks what a runaway truck ramp is, you can confidently tell them they're there for cops to sit at the very side of to set up a speed trap.

Keep going for the video.

Thanks to DT, who agrees desperate times call for desperate measures.

I didn't even know these things exist

    Flatlander.

How is this a safer / more cost effective solution than mandatory brake checks every X miles?

  • JJtoob

How cost effective is a ramp that only needs to exist and needs near zero maintenance?
You also have to consider this is only a last resort in case all else has failed, which doesn't happen often if your state requires regular check ups.

  • Jack Humphrey

Sometimes it can be from novice driver unaccustomed to their outfit or cargo. When you're heavy, braking causes a lot of heat, which reduces friction. Eventually they get hot enough to no longer function properly.

Ruptured lines are a real problem though, and I don't see as many stopped trucks as I should when I'm on the road though.

  • K Diddie

soooooooo, what happens when the truck stops going up the incline? What's to stop the truck from just rolling backwards into traffic?

  • Gilbert

Most of the path is loose gravel, so that the truck actually sinks as it's going up the hill, so the chance of rolling backwards is nil...

Sorry for being the only one to really answer your question...

  • Douchy McDouche

Obviously it rolls into a reverse runaway truck ramp. Duh!

  • Closet Nerd

I've ALWAYS wanted to see this happen!!!!

  • Deksam

    Me too!

    Dreams have been achieved today.
