Cyclist Tells Driver To Put Down Phone, Driver Argues He Can Text And Drive Safely, Crashes

December 14, 2018

This is some helmet-cam footage from Scottish cyclist David Brennan on the A739 Switchback Road between Bearsden and Glasgow when he gets into an argument with a motorist he spots texting and driving. He tells the guy to put down his phone, but the guy argues he can text and drive safely, before rear-ending the car in front of him shortly after. Obviously, while texting and driving has already been proven dangerous, I think it's high time we add arguing with cyclists and driving to that same list. I'll get to work on the PSAs.

Keep going for the video while I really wish it showed the aftermath.

Thanks to Damien, who agrees you should never drive angry.

At the end there he just biked in front of a car.

i wanted to post a normal comment, but the vibe here bummed me out :(

  • lushkneebumbuild

not from the texting though, because the distracting heckling cyclist was being an asshat

  • Douchy McDouche

Ironically it was the pesting cyclist who agitated the driver into crashing.

  • Munihausen

Very little sympathy for urban "cyclists."

  • Meh

Does it get any better than karma?

  • qcp

Whats worse, some guy checking his phone briefly or some guy on a bike following and harassing the guy until he wrecks?

  • tyr2180

    Driver made two mistakes:
    1. Never use your phone when your car is in motion.
    2. Never verbally engage with anyone outside your car. If someone comes up to your window and starts talking, ignore them completely. They are a distraction to your driving. But more importantly, people who do that are almost always ranty seethy idiotic road ragers. If they do something you can't ignore, pull over and call the police.

Oh, you're yelling something at me from outside my car?

  • Doog

The guy using his phone while driving is clearly worse...

  • qcp

1:20 in, right before the crash, bike guy is riding between cars in moving traffic to yell at the car guy.

Yeah he's super concerned about his own safety. /s

  • Ollie Williams

Driver is responsible for ensuring he is driving safely, regardless of external distractions. Arguing is not against the law. Driving a 3,000 pound machine easily capable of killing someone and texting is against the law.

  • qcp

    Found the douchey cyclist.

Entitled bike guy isn't a cop. He should have stayed in his lane and shut the fuck up.

  • heretikeen

Playing the advocatus diaboli at all cost is so 1990s ...

  • Matt Bloch

Couldn't have said devil's advocate? I had to look that up! In hindsight I feel ashamed that I didn't understand it immediately.

How do you feel about citizen's arrest? Do you think people should help when they can? Laws against using a cell phone while driving exist for a fucking reason. Don't have to be a cyclist to yell at a driver to get off their fucking phone.

  • qcp

Do you think people should help when they can?

  • Bling Nye

    Why not?

  • qcp

Even a cop will tell you not to get involved in situations like this. It's asinine and dangerous for everyone involved. Secondly, mind your own business. Have you ever met someone that takes it on themselves to police everyone around them that is also a pleasant person?

  • Bling Nye

I know cops and I know they say to get involved to the point your own safety and that of others isn't put in jeopardy. Act within your skills and comfort level.

What about the guy that tackles a shooter and stops them from shooting more people? They should just look the other way until the cops come? There's a lot that goes into the decision on whether to help or not, but to just say "mind your own business" is fucking cowardly in any situation. No offense personally, you have your opinion, I have mine.

I don't care if you're a cyclist, a pedestrian, or driving the biggest macho man truck of them all, they're all good places to tell another driver to get the fuck off their phone and drive.
