Construction Bots: A Humanoid Drywall Hanging Robot

October 3, 2018

This is a video demonstration of Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology's HRP-5P humanoid robot hanging some drywall. The robot, which can operate entirely untethered and weighs 222-pounds, might not be the world's fastest worker, but it also probably doesn't spend its lunch break sitting around with its robot pals cat-calling women either.

Keep going for the whole video while I become the first person to have a robot apocalypse bunker built entirely by robots (obviously I'll be decommissioning them all afterwards).

Thanks to Alan, who agrees if a robot can hang drywall, it can probably also hang a human from a towel hook, I'm just saying.

Let me know when they can cut in with a sash brush for an eight hour day.

This is just the intitial iteration of the technology peeps. Remember technology always gets smaller, faster, more efficient, and cheaper as it gets further developed. Imagine a construction site full of builder bots, construction workers and the field of construction will change as we know it. This is the advent of some very "sci-fi" style future in which we can drop a crew of construction bots to build houses, skyscrapers, office buildings, etc. It will put some people out of jobs, and create servicing jobs for these bots.It is both scary and fascinating!

First, it hangs drywall the wrong way (vert. sheesh). Second, I did not see it do coke even once, in the video, so, I don't think it is serious about drywall as a career.

  • TheQiwiMan

Pretty awesome. Send a fleet of these guys to the moon to start building me a summer home there.

The robot apocalypse...death by being dry walled in. I assume after having your foot nailed to the floor or something.

  • GeneralDisorder

If a robot can hang drywall it can also easily stack bricks and operate gas grenades.

  • The_Wretched

    And it's humanoid why?

  • Konstantin

So that it's slightly less weird when it starts catcalling passersby while on break.

  • Nicholas Conrad

Wut?? They built a drywall hanging robot, but forgot to build the nail gun into its hands? I sure hope it *at least* has a flamethrower and death-ray eyes, or else how will it get anything done?

  • Big Dog on Krampus

oh good, we gave one a gun

  • Doog

Other than hanging drywall at Fukushima, what is the point of this?

  • Geekologie

my guess is hanging drywall places other than Fukushima

  • Doog

Not a bad guess. You're pretty good at this.

  • Jenness

To steal all our jobs, self respect and rob us of the dignity of hard work. DUHHHHHH lol

  • Doog

    "They took our jobs!"
