Theo Jansen's New And Improved Wind-Powered Beach Walking Strandbeests

August 10, 2018

This is video highlighting the evolution of Theo Jansen's Strandbeests, as well as a video of the new UMINAMI model he developed this year (for those of you not familiar, Strandbeests are skeletal figures made from plastic tubing, string and zip-ties that walk along the beach, powered by the wind). Theo's latest design is arguably the best yet, and he says he eventually wants "to put these animals out in herds on the beaches, so they will live their own lives." Yeaaaah, is it just me or does that kinda sound like pollution? Still, that new UMINAMI really hauls ass down the shore. I don't think I've run down the beach that fast since someone yelled shark. "Yeah, and left the kids you were babysitting in the water." And they're totally fine! "No, they're afraid to take baths." They'll grow out of it. "They're in high school now." Okay they might need some counseling.

Keep going for the videos, the second of which focuses entirely on the all-new UMINAMI Straandbeast.

Thanks to my friend Amelie, who agrees beach Strandbeests have got nothing on beach sexybeasts like myself. "I never said that." You were thinking it though! "You don't even have a decent hot tub at night body, let alone a beach body." Your words hurt me.

Next, he'll build a large wooden badger...and then you , Sir Lancelot and I will leap OUT of the badger!

That music reminds me of my parents' favorite radio station. I've never been to fond of "easy listening" although I do sort of enjoy what you might call "golden oldies" which often get turned into easy listening covers.

I suppose a lot of old jazz is easy to listen to but that's kind of how things went in the days before rock and roll haha. Just happens this clip is featuring modern living Dutchman Benjamin Herman doing his best Stan Getz - and that's not a bad thing.

In my heart you are saying that in Morgan Freeman's voice.

As to where Jansen as a last name in the Netherlands is like Smith in the US, Strandbeest = Beachbeast, multiple would be "beesten" = beasts. And this Eric, well i'm now going to spend the next; if necessary infinite amount of time to find out how to block someone on disqus.

Excellent that took about 10 seconds. Praise Jesus.

  • Kaizer Chief

Hmm... I thought “beest” was Dutch for “bull” (as in “wildebeest” = “wild bull”). To the Google machine!

  • Nicholas Conrad

Oh man, I did that after his 3rd 'first' post. Has he moved on to other tropes now? I see long back and forths and thank my stars I only see half of it.

  • Doog

He also says "shit posts" from time to time and makes pathetic attempts at sounding threatening if you point out how stupid he sounds...

  • Eric Ord

    You're just jealous

  • Eric Ord

Are you trying to reply to me, or... ?
