A Size Comparison Of Various Video Game Maps

July 23, 2018

This is a video released by MetalBallStudios (previously) comparing the sizes of various video game maps. The video starts with the 9km² map of Grand Theft Auto III, and ends with a 4,096,000,000km² map of Minecraft (which is a significant jump from the previous 161,600km² map of The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall). I'd be lying if I told you I actually learned anything watching it, but some might argue I'm actually incapable of learning. Just ask any of my college professors. "He slept through almost every class." Haha, sometimes I wouldn't even wake up until the middle of the next class, different professor and everything.

Keep going for the video.

Thanks to Jessie H, who's not convinced that was the best way to visually compare the sizes of things.

The Biggest Game to Date is Hands down "No Mans Sky" a space simulation with over 18 quintillion (18,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) planets to explore, there is no measuring the scale of this size it impossible. virtually no loading screens, the only thing considered loading is going to warp to another star system. its massive with almost unlimited base building on any planet across multiple star systems. its impressive the scale of this game.

So... is GTA V the same map as San Andreas? I haven't played GTA V.

  • Jenness

That is actually pretty astounding. I would have liked to see virtual worlds like the Sims, Second Life and Eve Online - because I think they'd give Minecraft some competition size wise since they are user-created as well and much better funded in terms of people paying insane monthly rentals to build their own worlds like Minecraft.

  • GeneralDisorder

I think The Sims would mostly fit inside of GTA3 map.

Even Online would be... utterly enormous. It's fucking space!

    Jesus, where's the music from?

  • Matt Smith

it's from Kerbal Space Program, which is silly because they use their music but don't mention KSP's map, which is an entire solar system.

  • Meh

Ah that's it. Sheesh i played like 2000 hours of ksp, i should've known this.

  • Daniel Silva

Once upon a time, I thought the GTA3 map was huge. :|

TIL Los Angeles is larger than Azeroth.
