That's Too Much: Deadlift Causes Crazy Nose Bleed

March 6, 2018

This is a video of Mikhail Shivlyakov performing a 426kg (939-pound) deadlift at 2018 Arnold Strongman Classic and getting a gnarly bloody nose in the process. Somebody in the Youtube comments said it's a defense mechanism to protect your brain when your blood pressure is too high, although I have no clue if that's actually true or not because it was a Youtube comment and not an entry in a medical journal.

Keep going for the video unless blood makes you queasy (I fainted twice).

Thanks to Zootghost, who's just happy to see some people still know how to give 110%.

I knew that voice right away. Mark Henry hiding in the back over there.

  • TheQiwiMan

Could be worse... meaning the blood could be shooting out of ... other ... orifices...

  • GeneralDisorder

I feel like this is a given. In fact it probably is. He'll be pissing and shitting blood for a week now. And you know what... this concept doesn't even remotely phase me.

  • Doog

It would be terrible to have blood coming out of your wherever.

    Stay in school, kids.

Jesus, the bar can't even handle the weights, or it might be on purpose to avoid snapping?

  • BMan56

Yeah, and so everyone KNOWS it's heavy. And it looks really cool.

  • CarlosMarlos

Or maybe its just because of simple physics you idiots.

  • Meh

I hadn't even thought about that, but maybe that's actually taken into account^^

  • GeneralDisorder

Steel is extremely flexible which is why it's a good structural material. The reason it's strong is because it bends rather than breaks.

Imagine a blade of grass versus high wind compared to a tall dead oak tree vs the same high wind.

  • Meh

I realize its a matter of brittleness versus flexibility. Still we're not talking thousands of pounds here, so i don't understand why the pole has to flex that much if its not actually done to avoid breaking.

  • Keegano

To be fair, that is almost 1000 lbs.

  • GeneralDisorder

If the pole is made more rigid it either has to be heavier or more brittle. It's pretty basic material science.

If it was made of something lighter and less flexible it would most likely be more expensive.

What, no prolapsed rectum? Do you even lift bro?

I get a nose bleed from pushing too hard on the toilet. This makes me an athlete...

Nose bleed? bleeds when I do that, too.
