Real Products That Exist: Earthworm Jerky

March 30, 2018

In bet you can't eat just one news, this is the earthworm jerky available from the Newport Jerky Company of Newport, Rhode Island. It costs $10 for a 5 gram package, which is presumably about a million dried worms. Want to try earthworm jerky but don't feel like paying $10? Here's what you do: 1) wait for it to rain, then 2) wait for the sun to come out and finally, 3) rake the sidewalk. Bon appétit!

Thanks to Lydia, for reminding me how much I loved reading How To Eat Fried Worms when I was a kid, but also now. It's a timeless classic. Maybe not as good as The Boxcar Children, but nothing is.

I just bought some, along with a bag of Mako Shark jerky and "Edible Insects Bag of Mixed Edible Bugs. Grasshoppers, Crickets, Silk Worms and Sago Worms" Will report back. The site has some legitimately delicious-looking goods.

    yes, report back

    - The Mako Jerky is very tasty, though it is quite adulterated with lots of flavoring / spices. I almost wish it was more desiccated and less spiced. Worth trying, at any rate.

    - Of the Mixed Edible Bugs, the grubs are the best: nutty. Sago worms are...earthy? Crickets and grasshoppers are grassy (makes sense) and taste like a petting zoo smells - it isn't "bad," actually, just surprising that the taste sensation is so similar to the olfactory sensation.

    - The Earthworm jerky, perhaps predictably, taste like worms smell and have a small amount of residual dirt (gritty!), although they are nicely marinated.

Of the three items, I'd probably reorder the Mixed Bugs, and as I seem to have eaten the whole bag over the course of writing this, I guess I have to. Pure protein, low carb - great way to stay in shape.
