Fingers Of Fury: Guitarist Plays 1,000 Harmonics In 90 Seconds

November 30, 2017

This is a video of guitarist Alan Gogoll (previously: his video of watching guitar strings oscillate from inside a guitar) performing 1,000 harmonics ("a musical note played by preventing or amplifying vibration of certain overtones of a guitar string") in just a shade under 90 seconds. Now those are some magic fingers. My fingers? My fingers are not magic, but I do have a green thumb if you want to grow herbs behind your parent's house. "You mean weed." Only if you do.

Keep going for the video.

Thanks to Bedburner, who, dammit, now where am I supposed to sleep?

What's really impressive is his right hand technique (and I have 25 years of experience on the instrument). It's how he's managing at least 10 notes per second in order to hit what seems like a ridiculous total and that magical harp sound.

About half of those (like when he moves up onto the top of the neck around the 30 second mark) are generated by momentarily resting his index or middle fingertips on the open string at just the right distance from his thumb to get a harmonic rather than a muted buzz.

    Very impressive.

While I don't understand the technical aspects of this (just looks like a dude playing the guitar to me) I can appreciate the pretty sounds.

  • Homestar

What, uhh... What's going on here?

  • Ollie Williams

Harmonics on a guitar is when you lightly press on the string on top of a fret bar. You get this sound.
