The United States Of Sadness: Mom Asks For Solar Eclipse Viewing Party To Be Rescheduled Because Kids Are In School

August 10, 2017

A mother in Dallas, Texas recently posted on the Perot Museum of Nature and Science's Facebook page asking if they could reschedule their solar eclipse viewing party for the weekend since most kids will be in school on Monday, August 21st, when the eclipse is actually taking place. Obviously, she should have directed her request to God himself. Seriously, what was he thinking scheduling a solar eclipse in the middle of a Monday anyways? WEEKENDS ONLY, GOD. *watching out window as lightning strikes my car parked outside* Fine, whatever, it's your universe.

Thanks to Dougie, agrees somebody should contact Superman to see if he can't spin the earth backwards or something to honor this woman's request.

Reminds me of the lady that wrote to the government complaining about how the extra hour from Daylight Saving Time was killing her plants...

  • Jeedai Infidel

Or the lady that called a radio station in Washington that was talking about cars needing to slow down a particular curve where people were hitting deer a lot and her solution was to move the deer crossing sign so the deer could cross at a safer spot.

    LOL! That's a good one!

  • whacko

    Of course it was Texas...

  • locotx

Yeah, but any local idiot can make your area look bad. Let's just hope wonderful people like you don't make a blanket assumption that everyone is like that.

  • whacko

You'd have a point if Texas wasn't 49th out of 50 in quality of education in the United States. Stupid people are everywhere, but your chance of running into one in Texas is much higher than in say, Massachusetts.

I'm actually kinda surprised. Florida is the usual source for this sort of public idiocy, but there's no shortage of morons in any state.

Well, the GOP in Texas is actually, literally in opposition to critical thinking skills. From the 2012 party platform: "We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills... critical thinking skills and similar programs that ... have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority."

    It's okay, science is hard.

  • Djangus Roundstone

Well to be fair you can reschedule the party, it's just gonna be a really crappy eclipse viewing party

"Ok everybody, it's time to pull out your cardboard cutouts and hold them up to the sun!"

76 people thought that was a reasonable request, too.

How much do you want to bet that she's the sort of mom who doesn't understand why her kid's teachers are so terrible (because they won't give her exceptionally bright child the A that they deserve)? I know that's a bit of projecting on my part, but damn it.

  • Doog

The 76 'likes' I thought was the real story here.

Just as likely as your scenario is that she's some kind of local comedian simply making a joke.

I like my scenario better because it means there isn't actually 77 people that have absolutely zero understanding of how planets and heavenly bodies, planet and body. Though even in this most naive of assumptions at least one of the 76 weren't in on the joke and legit wanted the viewing party moved to the weekend.
