The End Nears: $10,000 Robot Can Climb Stairs, Fences, Open Doors

February 24, 2017

This is a video demonstration of the Minitaur quadruped robot developed by Ghost Robotics. The 13-pound robot stands about 10 inches tall, 16 inches long and can move over difficult terrain, climb stairs, fences, open doors, and is available for purchase for $10,000. Obviously, if any Minitaur robot climbs my stairs and opens my bedroom door at night, there's going to be a problem. There's also probably going to be a shit in the bed.

Keep going for the video while I nail all my doors shut and put a cyanide capsule in my cheek.

Thanks to Sebastian, who's inspired me to finish work on my robot apocalypse survival bunker this weekend.

i am no rocket scientest but would of it had been smoother non leaping movment on flat ground if the front right and back left moved in unison and then alternated the front left and back right to make it move more like an animal to gain beter stability and speed

  • Wow, that's amazing.
    Nothing a sledgehammer couldn't cure.

My cat does all this better, and despite him definitely plotting to kill me in his sleep, I still feel safer with a ball of fluff around than an autonomous assemblage of machinery.

I can imagine the footage from that mounted go-pro. My head already hurts.

the thing runs like an excited corgi.

    $10,000...just put propellors on it...?

  • GeneralDisorder

It makes about as much noise as a flying drone. Although I'd imagine the payload is higher with a ground based system.

I'm having a hard time envisioning a scenario where this particular robot would excel. I mean, flying drones can just go over most obstacles. If you need to infiltrate something stealthily you'd want something quieter than this freaky thing. If you need a robot to explore/inspect things... wheels and/or tracks. If you're doing something legal/legit/non-black-ops most fences have human-sized gates so just use them.

There have already been stair climbing bomb disposal robots that aren't terribly expensive. One with a huge claw that can open doors, hold weapons, or the like would be a bit more.

It's all fun and games until your floor was beshat by C4 pellets and it then runs off.

Beshat is my new favorite word
