Super Mario Theme Played Slow And In A Minor Key Sounds Depressing

February 6, 2017

This is a piano cover of the Super Mario Bros theme slowed down and played in a minor key. It sounds sad. It also doesn't sound like the Super Mario Bros theme. It could have been the Golden Girls theme song for all I know, I'm tone-deaf and have never lasted in a band longer than one rehearsal before the rest of the members mutiny on me. "Did they make you walk the plank?" Of course they made me walk the plank, it's pirate law. I live by a code.

Keep going for the video.

Thanks to carey, who wants to know if the Sonic The Hedgehog Green Hill Zone theme song is also sad in a minor key.

This could totally be in Westworld

one of my fav youtubers is Chase Holfelder, who does tons of major to minor covers. some of his versions are so astounding.

I love this kinda stuff. Can't get enough of Schmoyoho's 'Happy to Sad' songs:

Thanks, GW! New favorite YouTuber! :-D

I think the very first time I grasped this concept was while watching Inspector Gadget cartoons in the 80s. The sad, suspenseful, and calm scenes usually featured variants of the main theme played in different keys or tempo.

  • DrZanz

Wait... So you're telling me a lower key and tempo totally changes the mood of a piece of music?

But seriously, the fact this is actually profound to some people hurts my life.

  • DrZanz

Love it, but the second part is said as if it's the part that matters, it is not
