The Most Detailed Map Of Our Place In The Universe

January 25, 2017

This is a video of the current most detailed map of our place in the universe. It stretches over 500-million light years and contains over 100,000 galaxies. For reference, my whole universe stretches eight blocks from a beer store in the east to a taco stand in the west. I don't travel north or south so my universe is kind of a straight line. Explain that, Neil DeGrasse Tyson! "You need to get out more." I feel like I would be a totally content robot living in Westworld.

Keep going for the video.

Thanks to Billy C, who agrees the best place in the universe is anywhere speeding away from earth at maximum velocity.

"My God, it's full of stars."

I still kind of think we are dust in a giant's pocket.

Very cool. But that's not a map of the universe. It's a map of our supercluster. Which is probably just a teensy bit smaller than the universe.

Anybody have a link to a YouTube version of this? Fkin Vimeo yet again has decided to give me the never-ending sliding bars of infinite loading, rather than actually playing the fking video.

and past the taco stand? "here there be monsters"

  • AtomicAcorn

"Within each galaxy there are millions, billions, or perhaps even trillions of stars." I know they are trying to cover their bases for uneducated/young viewers, but damn if it didn't sound patronizing.
