Oh Wow: 10-Foot, 573-Pound Mortar Firework Fills The Sky With A Bunch Of Other Fireworks

November 9, 2016

This is a video of a nearly 10-foot, 573-pound firework exploding above Zurrieq, Malta. That...is one hell of a firework. What I wouldn't have given to ride that thing into the night sky. "It would have killed you." Would it have -- or would it have made me stronger? "It would have killed you." You sure about that? "Bits and pieces of you flying everywhere, the revelry below turning to horror as people realize what just landed in their drinks." Okay, okay, I get it. You didn't have to paint a picture, jeez.

Keep going for the clip (skip to 1:35 to just see this firework but the rest are good too), as well as another video captured from a helicopter.

Thanks to Thomas W, who sent his tip via bottle rocket. Just kidding, it was an email.

I would like to fire this off in a dry forest. A dry chaparral would also be acceptable.

  • A podcast I listened to yesterday was talking about how if you've seen a firework, you've seen all fireworks. Glad to see they are still bringing new shit to the game.

I went to the Pyrotechnics Guild International convention in 2013 on the night they had the 24 inch mortar (that's diameter or in firearm terms 24.0 caliber). It was a world record at the time and from the ground it looked just like any of the 12 inch mortars they were setting off all night. It was so high it took something like 2 seconds to hear the boom. And another 2 seconds to feel the shockwave.

It went so high it would have interfered with flight paths of jet liners. Of course jets give that area a wide berth during the convention.

The opener of that night was called 1 million firecrackers which was electronically ignited M80s stringed to go off like Lady Fingers or Black Cats (you know... the strings of firecrackers). It sounded a lot like being near Niagra Falls. Except they were M80 sized firecrackers.
