Man Builds Prototype For A Rotary Cellphone

November 7, 2016

This is the Arduino based rotary mobile phone built by Redditor Mr_Volt. It has a small OLED display, is capable of making rotary phone calls, and has enough memory to store a single number. Wow! It also has a sleep mode and -- AND -- an FM radio. Your grandpa is so jealous right now. Well, I mean he would be if he were awake to see this and not snoring in his La-Z-Boy. Let's hide his teeth so he calls us whippersnappers!

Keep going for a video of the phone in use.

Thanks to Dougie, who wants a full-size rotary cellphone so people will know he's the most eccentric person in the room. Heck yeah, you should get a monocle too.

My dad wants one... Of course he's 80 and can remember not having a phone at home. He uses rotary phones in the master bedroom and living room until recently. I even bought him a plain barebones push-button phone and he griped about "all those buttons".

He said "What does M1 through M10 do?" Nothing. Unless you program them. So if you just want a phone, ignore those.

Then he complained about "all those other buttons" like flash and whatever. I'm like, ignore that. Pick up the receiver, press the buttons. It dials. Hang up when you're done.

I wouldn't be able to decide whose number I'd save on it. I don't call all the numbers in my phone now...

if it was a tad shorted and had a more "easy" rotary dial, id buy one.

  • That's really useless... and I sort of want it.

How did you know? That is word for word what my woman said the first time she saw me! :-)
