Stairway To Heaven: Giant 'Sky Ladder' Firework Display

August 11, 2015

This is Sky Ladder, a pyrotechnic display created by Chinese artist Cai Guoqiang to celebrate his grandmother's 100th birthday. It was achieved by igniting a gunpowder-covered wire ladder danging some 500-meters (~1,640-feet) from a weather balloon. The result is spectacular, and I'm surprised nobody tried to climb it. Because I would have tried to climb it. "Haha -- getting into heaven the easy way, suckers!" I imagine myself yelling to the crowd before plummeting to my death and going straight to hell.

Hit the jump for several videos of the display.

Thanks to Lindsey P, who agrees the best fireworks are the ones you set off yourself because danger makes everything better.

    ...."danging" ??

    Swearing in front of grandma?

  • Billy Rocka

I'd rather the "Highway to Hell" fireworks display.

Gotdamn, these Chinamen make some mind-blowing fireworks. A "stairway to heaven" for your grandmother's birthday being in rather poor taste notwithstanding.

Dude, chinamen is not the preferred nomenclature.

  • Kaizer Chief

The Chinaman is not the issue!!!

  • Job Genders

They build iphones for the whole world, not one was used to film this spectacular sight... asians...

  • jodyberry

Agreed. The country with the best camera technology makes the worst videos!

  • Oliver Hakizimana

the video was filmed by some idiot who doesn't know how to hold a steady shot, or use a legit camera
