It's Beautiful: N64's GoldenEye 007 Music Decompressed

This is a video (although really just audio) of the N64 classic GoldenEye 007's soundtrack entirely decompressed. It sounds worlds different than it does in-game. What do you say you come over this weekend and we play some? "I call Oddjob." Of course you do. Tell me -- did your friends beat you up a lot when you used to play video games together back in the day? Well if they did that's called bullying, and it's not okay, even if you are a little cheater.

Keep going for the audio.

I read in a couple of other sources that these are the music composers original tracks before he was forced to compress the instruments to fit onto the N64 cartridge.

N64 sounded a bit muddier and muzzled due to hardware limitations. I just made a comparison via emulator, and on the N64 cartridge. Even though the emulator sounds a bit, just a wee bit better than on a TV with a N64, doesn't sound nowhere as good as this decompressed audio.

  • Decompressed? Meaning the files were played in a compressed state within the initial game cartridge? This just sounds like a the same midi played with a modified instrument set.

Need a comparison, feels like a lifetime since I played this - and in my memory it sounded like this and looked like an 8k omgamazinggraphics masterpiece.

Here's an actual bit for comparison. Look in the description and select Frigate for both and then compare. It's actually pretty astounding how much better the uncompressed version sounds when you compare the two directly.
