African Animals Responding To Themselves In A Mirror

June 2, 2015

animals-react-to-mirror.jpg

This is a video of the mirror that French photographer Xavier Hubert Brierre set up in Gabon, (on the Atlantic coast of equatorial Africa), to capture the reactions of passing animals. The footage includes gorillas, a bunch of chimps, a mandrill, a couple leopards, a couple birds of prey that I couldn't identify, and an elephant. The elephant seemed to be the only animal that didn't care about its reflection. 'I already know I'm ugly,' I imagine it thinking because that's actually how I feel about myself and I'm just projecting my own feelings here. Still, the video did teach me something. Mostly that's it really hard to watch a bunch of chimpanzee buttholes for more than a couple seconds, especially when you're trying to down a bowl of SpaghettiO's with mini meatballs.

Keep going for the video.

Thanks to RWL, who agrees they should try the same experiment with people leaving an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Interesting. Particularly the pale animal that was smearing its frothy fluid over the mirror @1:03 https://youtu.be/mM6OIlreneA

It's neat the way that the chimps figured it out but how the Gorillas were freaking out over it.

Yeah, a big silverback is so much about posturing. If you really pay attention he's not even really looking directly at it. No time for curiousity when you need to prove you're a badass. I would like to see females and younger male gorillas reacting to it.

Yeah, you'd think the gorilla would have been quite smart. He must have been one of the dumb ones considering he just thought he was seeing a rival silverback all the time.

Did anyone else notice how attractive the ass on the silver back is?

  • Jenness

I'm glad the bird didn't break it's neck LOL He smacked it pretty hard.

Typical bird reaction to seeing their reflection.
