Science?: Pouring Molten Aluminum Into A Watermelon

May 1, 2015

This is a video of TheBackyardScientist pouring molten aluminum into a watermelon to see what will happen. His hypothesis is that the watermelon will explode. Sadly, that hypothesis is rejected. It did make this cool casting of the seed chambers though. Now I kinda want to pour molten aluminum into everything just to see what sort of shape it'll make. Starting with MY MOUTH. Just kidding, but I am going to chew on an empty soda can and pretend I'm a goat. Plus if you get too close I'll eat your shoelaces.

Hit the jump for the video.

Thanks to Shana & Alex, who are going to start a Youtube channel that consists of nothing but pouring molten lava into different fruits and melons. I would watch that.

    Lies, this is clearly spinmetal

This is a pretty cool sculpture. If they did consider selling it, they would make quite a pretty penny.

Vegan version of the anthill cast.

That is, if your watermelon was free of any bugs inside it... And aluminum ore extraction destroys entire mountains, can it be considered to not harming any animal?

He could've been a bit better about pouring that stuff in.

    Seriously. What a loser

Give him a break. He's from Florida. The fact it didn't explode was success in itself.

What could possibly make it explode? When I watched this video for the first time, it just perplexed me. There is no combustible substance within a watermelon and there is a vent hole in the top to relieve pressure. Predicting that it will explode makes zero sense, yet they mention it multiple times.

  • Bobba_Fett

    Yeah you're probably right
