He's Floating!: Surfer Laird Hamilton Rides Giant Waves With Hydrofoil Surfboard

March 5, 2015

This is a video of big wave surf legend Laird Hamilton riding some waves on a surfboard with a hydrofoil attached, so it rises up out of the water when it gets up to speed. Personally, you'd never catch me in the ocean with ANYTHING strapped to my feet. That's like, a death sentence. That surfboard might as well be cinderblocks because I'm a goner.

Keep going for the video.

Thanks to Jan, who agrees it's only a matter of time before Poseidon intervenes and makes it clear that humans are no longer welcome in the ocean.

This is best surfing experience to You. I like all point to point steps on surfboards. Most of the time beginners couldn't adjust his body weight while surfing.

The chest device is buoyancy. He has several youtube videos where he states buoyancy is key to surviving big waves

  • Inappropirate

It could be padding since he his higher up. The impact from hitting the water is more severe and losing conciousness is very bad in water. But it could be a mixture of buoyancy and padding. If he is tethered to his board like in traditional surfing it might be able to pull him down with the added weight of the hydrofoil. I doubt the board has enough buoyancy for both him and the foil.

That is so cool! But seriously what the fuc..%&*# is sticking out from beneath his wetsuit? Anyone...?

  • TheQiwiMan

It's a chest-burster, obviously. (They just don't like to get wet, so it's staying cuddled up next to him)

  • Fredrik Pettersen

If the chestburster had anything to say in this wouldn't it rather be literally inside the man? In between his vital organs. Will it be even more comfy and safe there?

  • Fredrik Pettersen

Is it buoyancy? Or a big scary liger maybe?
