Pew Pew Pew!: Lyrebird Imitates Laser Gun Sound Effects

November 11, 2014

This is a video of a little lyrebird making laser gun sound effects (among other sounds). Lyrebirds, if you weren't aware, are some of the animal kingdom's greatest mimics, and mimic the natural and artificial sounds they hear in their environment. Obviously, this particular lyrebird appears to have been raised in the middle of an epic space battle.

Keep going for the video, as well as the one from David Attenborough's series with more impressive lyrebird mimicking (although the car alarm and chainsaws always make me kind of sad).

Thanks to Dan G, who agrees that bird has probably seen things that would make an astronaut blush.

OMG anyone would know that's a phaser gun, NOT a laser

  • kevin

How it mimics a chainsaw in the second video :(

  • This_Update_Sucks

    This bird watched Star Wars.

I've always thought that the lyrebird was amazing at mimicking sounds. Now somebody put that bird in front of a Street Fighter arcade machine for a week.

  • Roy

well that's impressive but check out THIS lyrebird!

  • Rhys Ewing

Must be an Australian, definitely Kookaburra sounds in there too!

In movies and video games sounds f/x, laser weapons sound like tsue, tsue, tsue.

No where does a movie laser gun sound like "pew, pew, pew", from which all get the drawn out pronunciation of peeee-ewwww for when something or someone really stinks.

  • Matt

i want one as a pet now...

  • Jenness

Why? So your family can be horrified by the unnatural sounds of you having sex or masturbating suddenly coming from the bird during dinner? Because please tape that humiliation fest if it occurs. ((pictures this Family Guy Episode:

  • Matt

exactly! the world needs to know what demented sounds i made during self stimulation!
