Sabertron: Foam Swords With Electronic Scorekeeping

May 23, 2014

Sabertron is a set of foam swords that have detectors and an electronic scoring system that can tell when the swords hit each other, and when they hit something else. Sword on sword hits don't cost you a life, but body blow do. Now, let's go out in the woods and do battle. "Fine, but you have to promise not to throw rocks this time." I promise...TO DEFEAT YOU BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY. Mwahahahahahaha! Now, drink this. "That's poison." No it's not. "It has a skull and crossbones on the bottle." IT'S PIRATE PUNCH. The five different game modes:

Self explanatory. Land one successful body hit, and you win.

Land three hits to win.

The stronger the blow, the more damage your opponent takes.

Identical to Countdown, only you can earn health back over the passage of time, or by blocking several blows.

The name says it all. Identical to Eternal Struggle, only you can earn health back more quickly, and with even fewer blocks. Also, the lower your health gets, the less damage you'll take.

$100 gets you two swords if the Kickstarter meets it's funding goal which it already has. I see these as a great way to settle arguments without actually having to kill the other person. I mean, if you're into that. I'm totally fine killing the other person.

Keep going for the Kickstarter video.

Thanks to Coleman and JS, who settle feuds the old fashioned way: burning their enemy's house to the ground with them inside.

  • Now this is something new that I am reading, a great invention in sword industry(although a replica). I wish such detectors could be fitted in real swords like claymore etc as well.

Toy of the decade! Wait, what happens if I'm in the middle of a match & start smacking myself with it?
Also, any idea if they're planning for multiple weapon types? Like a ginormous claymore (that's actually quite hefty so it doesn't give an unfair advantage) or a flail?

  • The Magnificent Newtboy

Multiple weapon types would be incredible! I think you're right though, you could cheat by hitting anything that wasn't your opponent's weapon...

I'm an intern with sabertron. The inventors are planning on coming out with different styles of weapons in the future also shields, and other accessories that will allow for more than a 2 person fight! The swords have a proximity so if you are a certain distance away and strike something then it will not count. Now if you guys are in the proximity obviously that hit would count, but who whats to cheat? That just ruins the whole point of the game.

Hey, I'll play by the rules if you do too. There will always be that prick who hits himself on the wind-up though. Or whips his own face.

The dudes making this were at Comic Con Dallas. I really liked the idea. Better than laser tag, cause I can beat my friends with a foam sword.

  • Star Wars rules!

  • This is a very good article, I think there will be many people like it, of course, I was one of the people. I think this article increase my knowledge. it is nice to know this. Thanks for the time and effort.
