Living With Lag: If Our Vision Lagged Like The Internet

April 29, 2014

This is Living With Lag, a short documentary from Swedish internet provider UmeNet showing how humans would act if our vision lagged like the internet. Basically they have people wearing Oculus Rift headsets with a webcam attached to the front streaming their actual perspective, but with a staggered delay. Then they had them perform tasks like playing table tennis, bowling, riding the bus and cooking. I laughed out loud at the dude cracking the egg. Sadly, they all did better than I do in real life, and my vision isn't laggy. Or maybe it is -- I never thought of that. Maybe all my sensory input takes the long way up to my brain. Like, oh shit, lets go hang out in his nuts for awhile, THEN up to the brain. That could also explain why I suck suck at editing articles so hard.

Hit the jump for two videos. The first watching from the outside with a little picture-in-picture view of the lag view, and another that's the opposite.

Thanks to my buddy Brian, who once punched through his monitor because Count Strike lagged out on him during an important clan match. Then his clan kicked him out. Haha, I remember that!

It looks like a single lens webcam so I presume its not 3d. That's got to have a huge impact on your reactions too...

It's like every female in these sort of videos has only ever played Mario.

Why is anything techy "like Mario"?

    Bitch, please.

  • da1nonlysage

Mad at Mario's fame, or mad at girls for being girls?

It's probably that awesome 'stash he's sporting more than anythng, right?

  • Torse

    Definitely the stache.

    I'm straight up smuckers.

Maybe I shouldn't base life decisions on such factors, but I've always aimed to live in Sweden for the great internet they have.

I've never played a game with less than 300ms lag. I'd like to try this experiment just to see if I can beat it.

There needs to be a dodgeball game with everyone wearing one of these

Completly wrong, for instance if you are lagging... you would swing the bat at pingpong game at the exact place but too late for initial hit if it were realtime. Now he stepped back then misses. And was looking down allready as it happened. Nice try!

    1. He see his own body movement with a lag too, that's why the disorientation.
    2. He hears without lag so when the ball falls on the floor he hears it imediatelly.

Agreed, but also the shadows are all wrong. This is just like the scene from...

Oh how I miss how people actually used to comment on Geekologie posts :( *cries*
