The United States That Might Have Been: Map Of Failed State Seccesions

January 3, 2014

Note: Larger, more legible version HERE.

This is a US map depicting the 124 states that could have been if every time a piece of a state tried to break away from the rest it had been successful. When I conquer and rule the country? One big state: GW-LAND. Yeah, and we're just gonna have a year-round carnival. What do you say, join my government and help make it happen? You play your cards right and I might even let you be my scapegoat.

Thanks to Marty, who is going to be my vice president in charge of rigging the carnival so we make even more money off the populous (just like a real government).

Seems like Hawaii, the Carolinas, Iowa and Connecticut are the only ones that have been content with their statehood. (the Carolinas were split before the US was a thing.)

So the only people that are satisfied are Michigan's and North Carolina's... that's very few people.

  • Tim Marshall

Michigan would have lost the UP and South Carolina was intact, as well.

  • John McDonald

    that's "secessions", not "successions"

    Nothing secedes like secess?
