I'm Coming, Lord: Optical Illusion Stairway To Heaven

November 18, 2013

This is David McCracken's 'Diminish and Ascend', a giant aluminum sculpture that looks like a stairway to heaven. It doesn't actually lead to the pearly gates though, it's just an optical illusion. It's really only 30-feet long and 15-feet high and is perched atop a hill at Bondi Beach in Australia. So trying to climb to the end will only result in a fall. What were you doing trying to sneak into heaven anyways? God generally frowns on that. "Did you just...?" Did I just what? "Did you just take money out of the collection plate when it was going around?" I thought it was like a give-a-penny, take-a-penny situation. "Well it's not." GOTTA RUN.

Keep going for two more shots in case you were wondering if the illusion works from other angles (it does!).

Thanks to Chris C, who agrees heaven better have an escalator because I don't do stairs.

I'm going to listen to Led Zeppelin now.

it's adorable that they think that rope is gonna stop anyone from climbing it.

someone - likely a kid or drunk guy - is going to try walking to the end of that and it's not going to be pretty. It is neat though.

Maybe they will reach heaven through the stairway? The stairway and the fall.

I like it as art but it otherwise is consistent with the idea that christianity is little more than an optical illusion (sham).

  • ShartInYourJacuzzi

Any connection to Christianity is injected by the viewer. In this case you.

    Ever hear of "Jacob's Ladder"?
Why don't you and Nathan do an internet search on bible verses about stairs and educate yourself about the religion you subscribe to but seem to have absolutely no knowledge of.

  • Nathan Klassen

need it have anything to do with Christianity? Listen to some Led Zeppelin when you have the chance.

  • n11

I want to see someone standing near the end of it just for comparison, pretty neat sculpture!
