PRETTY: The Patterns Of Different Audio Frequencies

June 16, 2013

This is a video of a Chladni plate experiment in which sand resonates to different frequencies to reveal a particular frequency's SECRET PATTERN. And we all love secret patterns here, right? Think of it as a special door knock you have to know to get into a club, but like, a way better example than that. That one was bad.

Hit the jump for two videos. The first with music added so you don't have to hear the actual frequencies, and the second with the original sound which you'll want to turn your speakers down for and still might go crazy.

Thanks to Angie and dev, whose favorite frequencies are both 106.7 KROQ.

What would happen if the pure tones were generated by a speaker?

I feel like I've seen this at every science museum "discovery zone" ever.

  • Patrick Filan

They actually aren't audio frequencies, just frequencies that the linear actuator is vibrating at. I modeled different modes of this in my Finite Element class a year ago and did the same plate experiment to validate the model.
