This is the giant floating assault rifle artist Michael Murphy made by suspending black ping pong balls from the ceiling (it's actually like twenty feet deep -- more shots after the jump). SURPRISE, it's supposed to carry a powerful social message. And apparently not one about the scarcity of black ping pong balls like you might have guessed.
...Michael Murphy shares his latest work -- a giant gun made from black ping pong balls, which he designed to make a statement about what he sees as the fetishization of weapons in America by creating 'a giant fetish object.'
Historically, secret societies have used little black balls to indicate a "no" vote. In this installation, Murphy explains, the ping pong balls are 'like little votes against gun culture.' The large gun is 'designed to be beautiful and adored ... and I'm trying to show how inappropriate that is, on a massive scale.'
I know I can't speak for everyone, but I don't really have a weapon fetish (except for ninja swords and battle axes). No, my fetish is a lot more basic. Women. And not just any women either -- naked ones. That's what I fetish about. Plus, okay, I've been dabbling in the leather scene too.
Hit the jump for a several more shots which show just how far away the balls are from each other when viewed from different angels.
Thanks Jaucet, now I want to play beer pong. Pick up a case and head over.
