LEGO Ending Jabba's Palace Playset Production Amidst 'Anti-Islamic' Complaints (Allegedly Unrelated Though)

April 3, 2013

LEGO is ceasing production of the Star Wars Jabba's Palace playset at the end of this year amidst complaints from Austria's Turkish community that the building is "mosque-like" and the minifigs included give Muslims a bad rap. Things to complain about: apparently we're getting to the very bottom of the list.

Furious Muslim critics complained that the Lego set's Asian and oriental figures were "deceitful and criminal" characters such as gun-runners, slave masters and terrorists.

"This sort of thing does not belong in a child's bedroom," said Melissa Gunes, a spokeswoman for Austria's Turkish Cultural Association. Critics also claimed that the palace had an uncanny resemblance to Istanbul's Hagia Sophia mosque. "The game is pedagogical dynamite. It depicts Muslims as terrorists," the TCA complained, adding that Jabba was shown to be a "terrorist who likes to smoke hookah and have his victims killed".

Did you read that? PEDAGOGICAL DYNAMITE, FOLKS. I honestly tried to imagine the set depicting Muslims as terrorists, and I couldn't. And that's saying a lot because I can imagine almost ANYTHING. The things I see when I close my eyes -- you could make a movie about them but nobody would ever be the same afterwards.

UPDATE: LEGO has stated they're ending production of the playset at the end of the year because it was already determined as the end of the product's life-cycle and not because of the criticism.

Thanks to Chillivanilly, who just stockpiled like 100 of them to sell on eBay in twenty years.

So glad I got this set... and all the other "terrorist" sets... LOL... people are dumb and will protest anything. What's next, AIR?!?

  • Dude, screw the Austria's Turkish Community! Are they going to start complaining about Return of the Jedi now? That's what the toy is based off of. Here's a way out there idea for the Austria's Turkish or anyone else who feel this toy give "a bad Rap" DON'T BY IT! DONE I can't figure how the minifigs could give Muslims a bad rap? Last time I check Jabba the Hutt was a gangster not a terrorist. And Lego grow a pair and stand up for you product.

  • Ed

Muslims sure are easily offended. Thankfully no one died this time. I don't understand how any of these lego toys could be thought of as depicting "Asians," "Orientals," or "Muslims." Doesn't CONTEXT prevent that? They're all aliens from a galaxy far far away and most don't even look human.

The Bottom Line: If you think Lego's Jabba is a crack at you personally, if you relate to him THAT much . . . you should seriously consider changing your lifestyle.

Why are people confusing religion and culture?

  • Datku

Oh please...this is complaining just to complain and attempt to make a name for yourself. Trust me there are much more things wrong in this world to bring attention to than a Lego Jabba the Hut toy set. How about those in your own community that are taking the word of the prophet and twisting them into justifying genocide, murder, rape, and any number of abusive treatments? But let me guess...since I have called you out on the actions of fellow Muslims I am now an infidel and deserve to die.

  • Met AL Mike

What a load of shit maybe they should complain about Return OF The Jedi as well what to complain about when you've got nothing better to do FUCK ME!!!!!!!!!!

  • da1nonlysage

Hey GeeDubb, you still afraid of the robot uprising? I'm learning to embrace it. Humans are dumb

  • I am muslim and I say that these complaints are ridiculous, there is no correlation between jabba and the muslim world. Sigh, these people should focus on more pressing issues in the real world rather than just some toy set.

  • TJ Larson

Why cease production of an entire line of toys because of one moronic community? I like how they only started complaining now about this when Star Wars has been around for 30+ years (including Jabba's Palace on the big screen). Just don't sell anything to that specific community. Or I don't know, maybe they could just protest with their dollars and not buy it, like any normal person. Problem solved.

  • Joey Svitek

You retard. They're only canceling this set, or can't you read, you stupid shit?

  • TJ Larson

Uh, thanks for repeating what I just said? How is my calling a playset a "line of toys" any different from me saying they're cancelling "a set" of toys?

Go project your impotent rage on someone else.

  • Joey Svitek

Because, jackass, a "line of toys" means an entire series of toys, not just one playset. Go back to huffing paint thinner.

  • Jeremy Sandlin

I feel like they should take these complaints up with George Lucas since this is modeled after the original set design and characters from the movie. And it's not like overtly racist characters have ever been in a Star Wars movie (I'm looking at you Jar Jar, Watto, Chewbacca you racist bastard.)

  • wish I was a terrorist so I could blow those dumb fucking muslims up...
    pew pew pew motherfuckers!

  • Joey Svitek

Please, kindly go fuck your self with a glass-encrusted cactus.

  • MC

I do not mind reading constructive and intellectual comments even when they are negative; however after reading your disgusting comment my mind is made up. I am on my way to your house now to insert your Internet browsing device(s) up your ass so you never again think to enlighten others with your filth.

What restaurant do you favor most, as a gentleman I will buy you dinner first.

  • Sirgio

Ha ha, I suggest dinner afterwards, could get messy!

  • I don't want to live on this planet anymore...

  • Jadis

I like the planet just fine, it's the people and what they've done to it I don't care for.

  • I more just thought it appropriate to make Futurama reference. lol
