Man Takes Off And Lands Plane With No Training Except What He Learned From Desktop Flight Simulators

February 4, 2013

This is a video of not a pilot successfully taking off and landing a Cessna 172 with zero training or flight experience except from what he learned playing desktop flight simulators. He does a pretty good job too, proving there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't be able to drive a car without a license provided you've beat at least one Grand Theft Auto.

Hit the jump for the video, but skip to about 7:00 unless you're interested in the whole back story.

Thanks to Ben Jammin', who's been jammin' for so long he doesn't even remember what it's like to NOT be jammin'. God that sounds beautiful.

As long as you know the cues, taking off/landing a plane under ideal conditions isn't that difficult. It's the "what to do when the plane stalls/catches on fire/ices" stuff that requires more training. Also flight planes. Those are tedious.

and this is the footage from the runway

  • Shoot, every thing i learned about aerial dog-fighting was from Sega's After Burner (arcade). B\

  • Flying a plane is basic knowledge, if you know the basics you are ok to take off and land. It's the safety, weather changes and communication that gets confusing.

the "s" in "successfully" is bothering me.

Hmm, I've been playing with a surgery simulator, I should go down to the hospital and see if they'll let me try an operation. Maybe just a basic appendectomy or perhaps bypass surgery on an infant?

There is a program in Vancouver that lets two people that know nothing of flying planes fly somewhere, land and come back after switching with other noob. It's also free, with a free lunch. I'd signed up about a year ago, and still nothing back from them. It's only a small plane, but pretty dope!

  • mythbusters did it with a 747 ....
