A Picture Guide To The Evolution Of Cell Phone Design

November 20, 2012

This is a graphical guide to the evolution of cell phone designs over the past 25 years. God, I remember a time when cell phones only came in backpack form. My dad kept one in the trunk for emergencies and I would always run around with it pretending to be a space ranger. *sigh* Those were simpler times.

Thanks to Jason W, who told me flip-phones are gonna make a comeback. Boy I hope so!

I believe its done as screenshots (7 phones downwards in length), with the next page of phones to its right but instead got put underneath; each line is supposed to flow down for 7 phones then start at the next line (or column) to the right going like this continuously. There should be 7 rows and 96 columns total, (image is supposed to be wider than it is tall) but Instead the image was cut every 12 columns and the resulting Eight pages connected below each previous image with no gaps between them, thus making the chart difficult to understand. I think that was originally the image creators intention, but am not sure the accuracy of the phones shown. BTW, columns run up and down, rows run side to side and the image should have had only 4 rows on the final page.

This somehow makes sense now, thanks.

  • Ok, I don't get it. Can someone explain me how to read this?

Sorry, I should have replied directly but some others are confused by the image so I put it as an individual comment. Look above to find my comment.

    Look at all those iphones.

The fact that the timeline flows down is mildly irritating. I have to admit that I looked at it, said "WTF is this bullshit?!" then went, "Oh, downwards. Really?" and decided not to bother.

    ...2000, 2001, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2007... My whole world has been turned upside-down.

So much chaos in this year counter... I'm lost.

  • Just think of the nearest trash dump..

  • GigiAUT

These are only the phones released on Japan's DoCoMo network, not EVERY single handset ever.

  • When the robot apocalypse comes these won't help. I'm going to train up a rat to carry messages.

gets a little murky between the obvious 2007/2008 year swap (as is common with these things). perhaps to interfere with the opportunity for people to view all the capacitive touch smart phones before the iphone, oh wait.

Hmm this is a bit weak considering none of them are real phones, and it is HUGELY inaccurate I'm afraid. I mean where the hell is the 3210? The worlds best selling mobile phone huh? - FAIL Geekologie, FAIL!

  • Saltomortal

In the cell phone industry, 2008 came before 2007.

apple's world works the same way.
