All The Rage: Pounding And Polishing Balls Of Aluminum Foil Into Beautiful Shiny Spheres

April 2, 2018

aluminum-foil-spheres.jpg

These are a couple videos from Japan, where hammering and polishing an entire roll of aluminum foil into as perfectly round and shiny a sphere as possible has become all the rage with teenagers. Or maybe just a minor rage. I don't know, I don't live in Japan, I only wish I did. What I do know is I'm going to make one after work today (which my mom will discover when she's trying to make baked potatoes for dinner tonight) except it's going to be giant and I'm going to roll it down the steepest hill I can find like the boulder in Raiders Of The Lost Ark. *closes eyes* I'm already playing the Indiana Jones theme song and running from the cops in my mind.

Keep going for a couple videos.

Thanks to shmash, who's going to try doing the same thing with wax paper. I'm going to try doing the same thing with the grocery bag I used to bring my lunch to work today.

The Japanese make the weirdest things. That's why they're amazing!

I was hooked on Tide pods for a while - but I'm clean now.

glad to see a good recovery!

    Im proud of you

I use crumpled aluminum balls as an alternative to the dryer sheets. It becomes smooth in the dryer after using it several times. Not as smooth as the photo but smooth enough.

I used to do this on a smaller scale at lunch in middleschool from my sandwitch wraper.

Don't wrap your baked potatoes in aluminum foil unless you want a soft skin on it. I like my baked potatoes with that crunchy jacket

  • Seth Brown

People realize that this and the aluminum foil knife videos are fake... right?

  • JJtoob

Seem pretty believable to me, but honestly, I don't care. I have no time to make a knife when I have many at hand, and not sure what I'd do with a shiny metallic ball that isn't even perfectly spherical, so the videos aren't even useful to me, other than knowing maybe I can make things out of aluminum foil if I have a lot of time and a little hammer. At most, this is just time wasted from re-watching The Office.

  • Douchy McDouche

    Yay, just like jesus.

Most people don't have time to be cynical regarding harmless internet nonsense. Perhaps it is, but...wait, gotta run - life stuff.

  • Ollie Williams

So no real instructions on how to make it, what products to use, or anything else, and half the video is repeating 3 second gifs.

    Okay.

If the Japanese can figure it out, or if any human being can figure it out, you can too!

  • Guesticle

I used to do this on a smaller scale at lunch in middleschool from my sandwich wrapper. you just rub it on the table really hard and fast until it gets hot. cubes were much easier than spheres for obvious reason

  • GeneralDisorder

    Step one... ball.

    Step two... polish

    Steps three through 100000000000000000000000000000... polish.

  • Ollie Williams

    Seems legit.

  • Douchy McDouche

I'd try to give you instructions but I'm afraid your next comment is going to be "What's foil? What's a hammer?"

  • Ollie Williams

I was talking more about the type of hammer, rubbing compound, and actual process.

  • Enzo Gorlami

Google that shit like a man. Want a mirror shine? Hint: FLITZ

  • Ollie Williams

I googled, "how to make balls shiny" but it didn't bring up the results I was looking for. Pleasant surprise by the image search, though.
