Oh Wow: Man Demonstrates And Discusses At Length The Way People Used To Walk In Medieval Times

October 6, 2017

This is a video of German historical reenactor Roland Warzecha demonstrating and discussing at length (it's a seven minute video) the gait of of people who lived during medieval times (presumably discovered via recently unearthed video tapes in a castle dungeon). Apparently because their shoes were so thin (little more than a "leather sock"), everyone walked on the balls of their feet first (as opposed to heel first) so they could sense what they were about to step on without putting their full weight down. Obviously, this is vital information and I'm glad I learned it before attending the Renaissance Faire later this month. I can't wait to try it out there. But mostly the mead and turkey legs, I'm more excited about those. Ooh -- and getting to throw an axe! "You do remember what happened last year?" Of course I do, I'm just hoping the guy working the axe-throwing booth doesn't.

Keep going for the very informative video.

Thanks to Covaire, who agrees we should make this walk this fall's must-walk walk.

Did they have landmines back then? Because I would walk that way if there were landmines everywhere. Or if I had a huge load in my pants.

  • Hazakabammer

Well, rather than landmines, they had lots of paths with sharp pointy rocks. Not these sand and water blasted gravel paths we have now where they smooth them out into balls. Also sticks, no pavement, nails which would be instant tetanus.

Methinks someone verily skipped leg day.....forsooth!

  • Ashley White

I walk like this all the time

  • Hazakabammer

Maybe you could walk your sweet, smackable ass back in the kitchen and show me.

GW was able to convey all the important information this guy provides in a 7 minute video in a couple sentences. Since 'brevity is the soul of wit', we can safely assume GW is one smart cookie.

  • This is how Anthony Daniels walked when he played Legolas in that old animated Lord of the Rings film. I wonder if that was actually a historical reference because of Legolas' shoes or if he and/or Ralph Bakshi just thought it looked elvish?

  • captaindash

Barefoot people walk on the balls of their feet too. I've seen zero people walk like that gif.

Hold on. Does this mean that older RPG video games (original Diablo, Baldur's Gate etc.) where people complained about characters that walked like they had sticks up their butts were actually the more accurate depictions?

  • erik

    So... everyone was gay, then?

  • antonin

Maybe the wool underwear is why they walked funny?

  • Ole Kraus

That my new insult. He's such a ball walker.

  • James Mcelroy

there's also the possibility that that guy is so full of crap it makes him walk funny.
