A Demonstration Of The Insane Heat Dissipation Of A Space Shuttle's Thermal Tiles

space-shuttle-thermal-tile-demonstration.jpg

This is an older video from a tour of the Kennedy Space Center of a man heating some blocks of space shuttle thermal tile to 2,200-degrees, then immediately being able to bare-hand them (but only by the corners), thanks to the tile's impressive heat dissipating properties. They kind of remind me of glowing Minecraft blocks. Obviously, given the opportunity I would have swallowed one, but that's just me and I've always dreamed of becoming a superhero. You know those 'DO NOT EAT' packets they put in bags of beef jerky and new shoes? "You eat those." How did you know? "Because you're an idiot." They're like salt and pepper to me except I have to go to the hospital afterwards.

Keep going for the video.

Thanks to Adrian, who agrees there's never been a better time to blast off into space and nuke earth from orbit.

It's a shame the video cuts just as we're about to learn something.

I think that guy does like three of those a day. I'm sure you can just google "space shuttle tile demonstration" and then scroll through and find the longest of them.

The Apollo spacecraft used an ablative heat shielding system. The space shuttle tiles are some bonded silica sand ceramic that's super low density. Despite traveling so fast on reentry they're not very strong, but they do resist wear from the friction of reentry.

That's America all over. Short attention span, shows something interesting and teaches you nothing.

As a Texan who experiences summer 9 months out of the year, I think NASA should put effort into making my leather car seats out of this stuff. Steering wheel too...

  • TheQiwiMan

Dude, as a Texan, it's your own fault for insisting on wearing your ass-less chaps everywhere you go. I still can't believe you wore those to grandma's funeral. :-(

  • Munihausen

Hey man, they have two kinds of music down there: country and western! yee haw

  • Talon184

    soooooo much c&w here...unfortunately

  • Hazakabammer

"unfortunately" - C&W kicks ass. Appalachian folk is best though.

  • Talon184

"Unfortunately" - No it doesn't. But, if you like it, more power to you. =)

  • Munihausen

Hah yes there is - but Texas is generally awesome, will be down there in November.

  • Talon184

Come on now...Mentioning assless chaps implies that I wear pants of any kind......which i only do at weddings...and even then, only assless chaps.
