Dash-Cam Captures Terrifying Plane Crash At Intersection In Washington

May 3, 2017

This is a car's dash-cam footage from Mukilteo, Washington, of a small plane striking some power lines and crashing in a ball of flames. Amazingly (and thankfully), both the pilot and passenger survived the incident and nobody else was injured, although several cars were damaged by the burning fuel. "Dammit, Harrison Ford." I thought the same thing.

The pilot said he started started losing power and couldn't restart the engine. As he began to go down, he saw that Harbour Pointe Boulevard was clear and open, and steered that direction.

Snohomish County PUD said about 9,000 customers lost power in the area.

This makes me want to never leave my apartment. Of course, knowing my luck a jet engine would still crash through the roof. "Just like in Donnie Darko!" Whoa, okay, spoiler alert much? All I'm saying is the world is a dangerous place, and we should all work on our risk reduction strategies. "Says the guy who eats fireworks." Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Keep going for the footage.

Thanks to HL, who agrees if you have to crash land your plane, the best place is right in front of a hospital.

Missed the airport by that much.

"Lost power", pictures of the prop from the crash clearly indicate the prop was spinning when it hit the ground. Also, I was 3 cars back from this video :-P

  • GeneralDisorder

Just because a prop is spinning doesn't mean it's spinning fast enough to push the plane.

As an A&P and Pilot myself, I am well aware of that. The pilot had informed authorities he had lost the engine. Something isn't correct here.

  • GeneralDisorder

I don't know the mechanics of that particular plane but wouldn't the prop be in the wind and potentially moved by the wind?

  • Ryan Cross Gerth

No, it's either an O-320 or O-360 engine, so massive cylinders with far too much compression. Also, he states he was at 500 feet meaning he was on final approach, so he was most certainly dirty in the air, indicating a lower than 100 indicated airspeed

  • Bling Nye

The linked article indicated he was flying a Piper PA-32, and was taking off, not landing.

Maybe he left the parking brake on.

The biggest shocker of the video is the inability to drive properly from the people there.

I like that, despite how amazing this footage is, I can't help but shake my head at the driver crossing two lanes at the lost moment so that they can get in the proper turn lane.

Makes me miss living in Washington.

I thought "sheesh" too when I saw that in the beginning
