It Never Stood A Chance: Pumping 20,000 Volts Into A Watermelon

March 15, 2017

20000-volts-vs-watermelon.jpg

This is a video of inevitable medical bill GoFundMe recipient Backyard Scientist and his friends pumping a watermelon full of 20,000 volts in a split second. They also try to cook a steak using the same method, which just gets a hole blown right through the middle. Electricity: it's terrifying. I especially liked the part where they didn't realize the capacitor still had a charge in it and they all surprised themselves with a huge spark. Death: he's knocking at your door. I also liked the part where a neighbor threatens to call the cops and The Backyard Scientist's dad yells at them. I didn't like the part where I wasn't invited.

Keep going for the video, but skip to 2:45 if you don't have time for science and just want to see things blow up.

Thanks to Dougie, who agrees this kid has put his neighbors through enough.

I still want to know if the cops got called this time, and how many times it's happened so far in the past...

  • Jon

So many times they probably take one look at the address and go "Oh it's just that science kid again".

  • Gingerbread

I bet Mike Pence is taking notes about this experiment...

  • The_Wretched

They missed on the safety on this one. How does an EE not double check for full discharge (and no recharge) of the system?

  • GeneralDisorder

Oh look. Backyard idiot is back at it risking life and limb for sweet sweet YT traffic.

I will say... nice rig. I don't know nearly enough about electronics to build such a thing. I sort of want to though.
