Needs More Pews: Laser Blaster Rust Removal Gun

March 17, 2016

laser-rust-removal.jpg

This is a video demonstration of a laser-based rust removal gun. Lasers: is there anything they can't do? I'm not really sure what's going on, but it looks like it works. It also looks worlds easier than using a grinder. Still, the question remains how good it is at hair removal. I'm guessing really good. Now do my eyebrows.

Keep going for the video.

Thanks to pyrat hero!, who uses laser blasters to commandeer larger ships and steal their treasure.

  • Rhonda C. Haswell

Where can you buy one at?

  • Michael Knight

or you could just use Coca Cola....

  • Konstantin

That feeling when the safest way to do something involves a giant laser.

  • The_Wretched

Looks like magic, anyone have experience with this?

  • MustacheHam

Okay, now we know who has found the hair trimmer of Chuck Norris.

  • DeksamTorrac

Oh, I want one! But I would be careful not to look directly into the beam!

  • Will

I'm gonna need to borrow that for a day or two... wonder if it uses AA batteries?

  • DeksamTorrac

I can only get a high score of 380 by jumping that dinosaur.

  • GeneralDisorder

That video title belongs in /r/titlegore. "Without Chemicals Or Abrasives"? I think rust is a chemical.

  • The_Wretched

Grammar GD - the removal doesn't rely on applying chemicals. Applying the laser might involve a chemical change in the metal but I doubt it.

  • GeneralDisorder

That has nothing to do with grammar and everything to do with me being a pedantic jerkbag.

  • Soylent Green Is People

    1000% trufax, can confirm.

  • Nah, a true pedant would have to post that the laser ablates the rust, thus no chemicals or abrasives involved. The rust absorbs the laser light energy & quickly becomes either a vapor or plasma, while the non-oxidized metal reflects it.

  • GeneralDisorder

"No chemicals" would suggest that it's something that doesn't exist because everything is chemicals.

  • Except that is clear from the context that "chemicals" refers only to the *method* of rust removal. There are actually classes of methods already established, such as mechanical removal, chemical removal, chemical alteration and now a new one, laser ablation.

  • Hypotenus Love Triangle

All that technology and ingenuity and he still shoots video in Profile mode. Motherf*cker!

  • GeneralDisorder

The YouTube app on Android can now show videos in profile mode using the full screen... I just noticed that a couple days ago.

  • whacko

Too bad a lot of people are still gonna view the video on a PC monitor, where it will look like shit.

  • TheDR

Finally, a shaving range suitable for Bender.

  • whacko

The laser is pretty awesome, but people really need to learn how to hold their damn cameras when filming video.
