These are several pictures and some video of the dog train that 80-year old retiree Eugene Bostick built to take his rescue dogs on trips around the area he lives in Forth Worth, Texas. It is probably the most beautiful thing I have seen all week. Why does Eugene have so many rescue dogs? Oh right, because a lot of other people are giant pieces of worthless shit.
"We live down on a dead-end street, where me and my brother have a horse barn," Bostick told The Dodo. "People sometimes come by and dump dogs out here, leaving them to starve. So, we started feeding them, letting them in, taking them to the vet to get them spayed and neutered. We made a place for them to live."
"One day I was out and I seen this guy with a tractor who attached these carts to pull rocks. I thought, 'Dang, that would do for a dog train,'" said Bostick. "I'm a pretty good welder, so I took these plastic barrels with holes cut in them, and put wheels under them and tied them together."
"Whenever they hear me hooking the tractor up to it, man, they get so excited," said Bostick. "They all come running and jump in on their own. They're ready to go."
Happy endings. I wish there a billion more Eugenes in the world, and a billion less anybodies who would abandon a pet to die. I've always dreamed of starting a dog rescue farm and just laying in a field getting dog kisses all day. And I know some of you have had the same dream. Can we make that happen? It'll be like a hippie commune but with a lot less free love because I'm not making out with anybody who's already had sixty dog tongues in their mouth today.
Keep going for a couple more pictures and a video of the train in action where the dog in the fourth car (oddly labeled #3) is clearly having THE TIME OF HIS LIFE.
Thanks to JD, for reaffirming there are still beautiful people left in this world.
