Sounds Legit: Vintage Game Boy Ad Promises 'Graphics So Real You'll Forget It's Only A Game'

This is a vintage Capcom ad for the Game Boy game Gargoyle's Quest that promises 'graphics so real you'll forget it's only a game.' That is a pretty bold statement. Especially considering you're talking about Game Boy graphics. I wonder who came up with this ad. Like, whose idea was it to work this THE GRAPHICS ARE SO REALISTIC angle? You think they still work in advertising? I am good at advertising. I've sold ice bricks to Eskimos before. "You melted their igloos with a flamethrower." That's beside the point, I made the sale.

Thanks to Benjamin K, who thought the graphics on his old Nokia brick phone were so realistic he was afraid to play Snake.

  • Dinkum_Thinkum

The graphics in that game were noticeably above and beyond other game boy games at the time. It was impressive for the technology.

You know what will be sad, we look at this from our point of view nowadays but imagine in ten years from now and kids will look at the games we play now as a joke, like wow they thought that Uncharted 4 game was realistic? We will be like that is Kinda Funny you say that, we thought this gameboy ad back in the day was funny also.

  • Skyinferno

You know.... back in the day the graphics DID seem pretty real. The first console I played was the Odyssey 2. Most people sprites consisted of 5-8 pixels. Once we got a Nintendo, games like Tecmo NBA Basketball seemed so realistic. I know I said that a thousand times well playing my Nintendo. It just seems so ridiculous to us nowadays, but when that's all there was, graphics did look "so real."

PS The Odyssey 2 and Nintendo are still some of my favorite consoles. Games don't need to look pretty to be amazingly fun.

My mum often tells me that the first time she saw ads for Mario 64, she couldn't believe how real Mario looked.

  • FAKE!!!!

This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its a fake because the shadow's are all wrong.

This is exactly like that scene in the movie Never Back Down where Max and Baja spent the night in a motel room making pipe bombs out of stuff they stole from a hardware store.

  • Leland_Gaunt

Nope, it's real. I'm old enough to remember this ad.

  • Captain Matticus, LP Inc.

Remember its competition at the time: Custer's Last Stand, ET, and PONG. Damn straight those graphics were realistic.

I wonder if that phone number still works.

  • El Geeko Writer has probably never played un PS Vita?

  • Rene

That game had beautiful graphics for the time, and as the ad tells, it was one of the few that was able to scroll in every direction. Also, very little motion bleeds (like in Super Mario Land) without the need to move like molasses (Castlevania Adventure)

  • FearlessFarris

I loved this game! Gargoyles Quest was easily in my top 5 favorite Game Boy Games. (Also, "Boomer's Adventures in Asmik World," "Bionic Commando," "Mega Man," and "Duck Tales").

I was never able to beat it, though. I seem to remember reaching a random point on the game map, and never being able to figure out how to advance any further.

It's true. Back then the world was black and white.

  • Skyinferno

You mean black and green, right?

  • Xockszky

Haha even then a lot of people would laugh at that, although a lot of people didn't really care too much that the Gameboy had a horrible screen, it was just cool to be able to play games when you're out. How times changed!

  • dougfunnay

except the game gear and atari lynx came out nearly at the same time and made the game boy look like a god damned joke

    marketing wins again

  • arana

my favourite was the NOMAD, real 16 bit color games, when nintendo didnt even dream about those being portable

  • Sebastiann Eleganté Neely

Neither were nearly as portable as the Gameboy was, and had worse battery lives.

  • dougfunnay

because they had back lit color screens that nintendo couldnt seem to figure out for another 13 years
hell you could watch tv on the game gear
(and yeah you couldnt fit them in your pocket but they were still very portable)

there were more good games for game boy though
(has nothing to do with system itself)

  • timeiskey

from what i understand, nintendo uses old tech so that developers dont have to make big transitions and can mostly just get to work with what they are familiar
