Hammer Time: Marvel Announces Thor Is A Woman Now

woman-thor.jpg

In case you haven't heard because Geekologie is your only news source (which is probably the smartest decision you've ever made), Marvel announced on The View (solid platform) yesterday that Thor is going to be a woman now. Like, a woman is going to pick up Thor's hammer and become Thor and NOT undergo gender reassignment surgery which would be way more progressive and shame on Marvel for not at least considering it. Although, honestly, I bet they did.

"This is not She-Thor," senior writer Jason Aaron said in a Marvel release. "This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it's unlike any Thor we've ever seen before."

Wait -- I thought Thor was already a lady. Who was that woman that played her in the movies? "Chris Hemsworth?" Yeah -- her. She's pretty. "That's a dude." Whaaaaaat? But all that long flowing hair and smooth skin. "He's a dude." And Legolas from Lord of the Rings? "Also a dude." Damn, I need to lie down and try not to think about all the times I've masturbated to those two.

Thanks to everyone who sent this, at least half of which felt the need to swear they don't watch The View.

Not the first time Marvel made a head-scratching change, but that's life. And I wonder, is this Thor Girl?

  • Dani

The Marvel guys saw this hottie that got their hammers hard, and they decided Thor is a girl now:

Thor and Loki have a long lost sister. She was a character in the Spawn comics and that character is now a part of the marvel universe. I doubt this is about "diversity" and is more about introducing and assimilating an old character into a new universe.

    Read this and be informed.

DC won't make WW cos it isn't a "believable" 'verse. Marvel calls bullshit. XD

  • Post_Nazi

Wait, what? This isn't Marvel making Thor a woman in the movies, this is Marvel making Thor a woman in the comic books - which DC has already "made" WW for quite some time. Marvel comics is pretty tame when it comes to how courageous they are in trying new waters. They "killed" Spider Man, but - hey, that's not sticking (and you knew it wasn't going to from the very first comic where he was dead). Wolverine won't stay dead. And the Marvel NOW! is just a really pathetic attempt to reap the benefits of DCs New 52, which was an extremely risky thing to do.

I made an offhand joke. I haven't had the opportunity to read any of the comics and sometimes feel that the way people like you talk about them, I will never catch up. None of this is really as serious as people make it out to be. Like you said, story arcs change but a lot of them never stick. Either this will be a bust or people will eventually accept/love it.

I find this highly offensive to the nordic culture and race and religion
how would you like it if they put muhamad in a dress?

  • Guest

I would like that very much

  • Guest

Correction. I mean not "how would you like" but "would marvel do"

  • DFCtomm

Vikings don't go on mad killing sprees because their religion has been offended, anymore but if they did then Marvel would fold like as quickly as any other big company, think comedy central.

  • Skot

Vikings did go on mad killing sprees, dude. all in support of their religion. they killed thousands to earn the right to spend paradise with their god, based on word-of-mouth explanations handed down through the ages about their religion.

  • DFCtomm

When was that last Viking killing spree? Muslims are currently involved in religious purges right now in Iraq.

screw the view. reneg, say you were just fucking with them

Someone in upper management must reeeeaaaally want to see some "fan art" of a female Thor.
I approve (I don't follow much comic books anyway).

  • Luka Mlinar

I'm not even gonna watch the fantastic four with a black human torch and white invisible woman. Why would i watch this?

  • Skot

    human charcoal?

Reading these comments, you would think that a 'geek site' would realize that (in the Marvel universe) a few different people have already been Thor. A bunch have help Mjolnir and gained the powers of Thor (including women) as well.

Norse Thor only loosely fits with Marvel Thor anyway.

And to the people saying that they can't just make Thor a female, that he's a man, and asking about his relationships/memories. This changes nothing. The male Thor is still a character, he just lost the right to 'be' Thor (what he will be called is an interesting question though), and this new female Thor is simply taking over the mantle of Thor. Think of Thor more like a title than a name.
