Whee!: Elevator Malfunctions, Jets Up 31 Stories Into Roof

June 9, 2014

This is a video of Chilean man José Vergara Acevedo's life-changing elevator ride. After he gets in and pushes the button, the elevator malfunctions, the doors reopen, and it flies up 31 stories in 15-seconds before crashing into the building's roof. José was injured but expected to recover. Also, to only take the stairs in the future.

Keep going for the video.

Thanks to GLOB, who always jumps up and down in elevators yelling, "PLUMMET! PLUMMET!" to scare the shit out of everyone else.

    Well, that escalated quickly.

  • Steven Payne

he shouldn't have pressed "Up and Out".

  • Closet Nerd

I wish I could ride that. Would be a fun suicide away from my abusive family.

    ....just sayin

its about time you got the ".....just sayin" correct too

Sir I do not appreciate that not only do you steal my name, but you insult me with this insistance that I am infact the imposter. It is utterly amazing that you go to such great lengths.

For God's sake, stop pressing the damn buttons! You don't know how to elevator!!

at least para is better than quad....he can still take ladders with some work

  • Branah De La Jara

he's never going to use the stairs again and he is not expected to recover, he is paraplegic and with permanent neurological damage. :(

  • zin

So not only does he now have a rational fear of all elevators, he can't avoid them if he wants to go higher than the ground floor? Wow, talk about pulling the short end of the stick.

Will he be compensated well for this? I have no idea what things are like in Chile.

  • asdfasdfasdf

    ah, that sucks

  • Taylor Eisman

he's paralyzed now from the waist down :(

  • Lloni

True. They said in the news (in chile) that he was paraplegic now. Bad luck :/

  • Mike

beta version of the elevator from Willy Wonka.

Actually, now that it's reported that this elevator has given its passenger a fate worse than death, I'm staying on this elevator's good side. Until the Great Glass Elevator comes to reclaim its turf, that is.

Any suggestions on what to name this elevator? Manevator?

i donno...paralyzed from the waist down...worse than death?

shouldn't that be up to the guy it happened to?
Or is it wheelchair accessible deathcamp time for their own good?

  • zin

I sense a touch of "you're being insentitive" there. For what it's worth, no, I personally don't think that it's a fate worse than death... though I use my Tarzan toes a lot when I don't feel like using my hands.

It's just a trope, or rather, a declaration of how unfortunate this is. One day he was walking around as he has been for the past 30-ish years, & the next day his legs (& nearly his life) are taken from him. Accidents are unavoidable, but he's facing some serious hardships, now & down the road. I can relate.

    So... Elemantor? Carnivator?

  • YipYap

I think I would have panicked a lot more!

  • I bet when he realized the buttons didn't work, his stomach dropped.

first the turing test and now this...
