Little Birds Learn How To Use Motion-Detecting Door

birds-opening-doors.jpg

This is a video of swallows that have learned to use a motion-detecting door at the University of Victoria's bike-parking garage so they can gain access to their nests inside (which they made before the doors were installed). For reference, that makes them smarter than the 75% of Americans who always try to push doors that are clearly labeled PULL. "Yeah, well they should start with different letters." My roommate, ladies and gentlemen! I still can't believe he hasn't been court-ordered to live with his parents for his own safety.

Keep going for the video.

Thanks to April, who, despite my begging, refused to introduce me to the ninja turtles.

Meh, sparrows at my local mall do this all the time to get into the food court area.

There was a bird nest inside a home supply store near where I live. Customers came and went all day long, so the birds sat in the rafters waiting for people to trigger the doors. The birds swooped past people's heads as they entered or exited. Kind-of unnerving for some people. I don't know what they did during the times the store wasn't open.

That's great! Swallows are amazing little acrobats!

So what, people do this everyday, but they don't get a video for it.

GW, get a new roomie & go back to posting Disney princesses.

  • tim

That's all fine and good for a youtube video, but the real reason they put in a door is so that they can lock it, and the poor swallows will unceasingly hover around the sensor after hours while waiting for someone with a keypass to grant them access.

I bet it is locked after it gets dark and most birds roost before sundown.

and? why dont you offer to let the birds live in your house? oh thats right, nobody would actually do that, because nobody wants these filthy wild birds in their building.
