Beautiful Bronze Smaug Sculptures From The Hobbit

smaug-sculpture-1.jpg

This is the bronze Smaug sculpture created by artist John Howe and WETA Workshop. Each one costs $4,900 and is a 3-D replica of the Smaug pictured on the 1991 paperback versions of The Hobbit (which John illustrated). Do you think you're brave enough to slay a dragon? Because I don't think I could do it. Unless there was a pile of gold or fair maiden that needs rescuing involved, in which case I'd give it my best. My best being contracting somebody else to do it for me. 'The dragon scales are yours, but the gold and princess are mine,' the fine print will read.

Keep going for a couple more shots, as well as the BONUS coin pouch of Smaug's gold treasures you can buy for $35 in case $4,900 is a little out of your Hobbit collection budget.

Thanks to me, for being willing to admit I could not face a dragon. Some people would lie to themselves.

What's up with the base? Is that what it's actually mounted on? What is it...a giant chunk of particle board with wood laminates? Is it just me, or does it look cheap? For over $4,000 you'd think they could mount it on a nice, solid piece of wood.

Looks to me like it may be 3 solid planks pressed together.... maybe to accommodate some kind of mounting for the base?

  • Tyguy

It's funny....if it wasn't labeled as a "Smaug" sculpture, it would just be another crap dragon sculpture, and nobody would care.

  • The Magnificent Newtboy

I recognised it as the front cover of the hobbit instantly. But then I read that book obsessively as a kid.

You're just mad because you can't afford it.
