Couples Using Virtual Reality To Briefly Switch Genders

This is a video from the art installation The Machine to be Another featuring pairs of opposite sex participants wearing virtual reality headsets and going through a series of movements simultaneously while viewing the other's perspective. So if I'm a guy looking down and rubbing my boobs, I see the female's perspective of her doing the same thing, and she mine. That make sense? No? Well just watch the video, it has boobs in it. Did I lick my monitor? I never kiss and tell! This wasn't a kiss though, it was a lick, and I did.

    They move slowly enough to automatically adapt to their views motions. Imagine you see your arm move, but your real arm isn't moving at all, so you try to emulate what you are seeing. You have a bit of a lag, I guess, but the slower the motion, the lesser the lag and the better the adaptation.

    From a psychological and sociological point of view it is a really nice experiment. Until we can really simulate virtual "gender swaps" this is the best we can get.

    From the article: "Through out this experiment, we aim to investigate issues like Gender Identity, Queer Theory, feminist technoscience, Intimacy and Mutual Respect. " Basically, it's an experiment in seeing from another gender's perspective, and how they see themselves.

    I think its the whole someone else's shoes idea that they are getting at but in a severely limited way... On the other hand if you ignore the scienceish part its a pretty cool/weird idea and would be quite interesting to experience.
