Speedy!: Turtle Gets A LEGO Wheel For Amputated Leg

turtle-with-lego-wheel-1.jpg

Meet Schildi. Schildi was a pet turtle living in Germany when he was abandoned (or escaped), and lost a leg in the real world. The real world -- it'll take your f***ing legs. Thankfully Schildi was rescued, and vets were able to amputate his mangled limb and replace it with a LEGO wheel. Cool, now all he needs is a jetpack.

Dr. Azmanis used a special surgical glue to stick the base block underneath tiny Schildi and then superglue to connect the corners of the block:

"After that we could add blocks to achieve the correct height," he said. And now the single wheel has proven to be successful, Schildi has been taken back to the animal shelter. "We will see him again once in a while for check-ups," Azmanis said. "If he gets a 'flat tyre' it will be a simple matter to replace the wheel. They move around quite a lot so I'd expect to see him for a new wheel about once a year."

Good lookin', Schildi. If I lived in Germany I'd adopt you and introduce to my other friends...THE NINJA TURTLES! "Do you actually know them?!" Sure do, I write them fan mail. "And they write back?" Well not yet, but I'm sure they're going to. "So you don't actually know them." I guess you could say that.

Hit the jump for one more shot.

Thanks to Joseph, who agrees this guy would kick the hare's ass in a race.

Best story ever. This seed of compassion that sits forever in the heart of man is truly our best hope. It is also a sign, in my humble opinion, of a greater purpose. What that is, I hope we discover one day.

It is also interesting that despite how ugly the turtle is, it is still beautiful. I think there is a lesson in that as well.

  • @wowemily:disqus Lesson: ugly people deserve wheels too.

  • Lea Reed

    Now that was profound.

  • TyDurd

Hmmm, I know that particular lego wheel and although I see he has a turn plate so the wheel can swivel, the wheel has 0 degrees of caster so it won't be very responsive if the turtle makes a sharp left or right. And having owned a turtle the do turn like tanks sometimes.

    Tortoise. Turtles have flippers.

  • Amy

Nope. There are terrestrial turtles, like box turtles who do not have flippers.

  • Cody Panton

There's really not much difference between a turtle and a tortoise.

Tell that to a tortoise, and I suspect you'll get an earful.
