You're Hired: Animatronic Expert's Impressive Show Reel

This is animatronics expert Gustav Hoegen's 2012 show reel. It's good. Gustav's work has included robots for Prometheus, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Clash of the Titans, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Doctor Who AND MORE. It really is worth a view. Sometimes it was hard to believe the creatures I was watching were actual robots I wanted to burn with fire and not real aliens I wanted to burn with fire. The burning with fire though, that's the common denominator. FOR EVERYTHING. I swear, staring into flames -- that's when I do some of my best thinking. At least until someone from the fire department spots me and takes me in for questioning.

Hit the jump for Gustav's skills in action.

Thanks to KimFree, who agrees it's only a matter of time before you can't tell the difference between your real friends and robots pretending to be your friends.

Amazing work. I hate how this stuff always turns into a CGI vs practical effects war though... They both have their place, and many (not all of course) of these animatronics wouldn't look good if they weren't digitally composted and blended with CG.

They do overuse CG for unnecessary things though.

Could you imagine what wax museums would be like if the figures were replaced with these?

It would be full of people crapping their trousers. That's would it would be like. :)

I know that CGI is probably cheaper, but I'd take these over CGI almost all the time. They're amazing. The David one from Prometheus is especially astounding, because it is so life-like. The grotesques can get away without being humanlike, but not the humanlike android - and David is incredible.

I really wish I had the ability to have this guys job. Thats got to be a really cool life to work on stuff like this all day. I also thought that this stuff was CGI as well.

This is amazing work, I honestly thought most of those were CG when I saw them in the movies/shows they were in. It's great to see that animatronics are getting better as well as computer generated stuff.
Now why aren't Sony and such hiring this guy to build their AI robots?
