Pi In The Sky: Pilots 'Skytype' Pi To 1,000 Places

Because what better way to brag to aliens that we know numbers, a group of pilots skytyped (the numbers were created with puffs of smoke and not written with loopty loops) pi to 1,000 digits above San Francisco earlier this week. Above LA? Pure smog. Some days you can't even see taller people's faces.
The "Pi In The Sky" skywriting event required five planes flying in sync in a loop over 100 miles long to fit it all in. The piece was created by an artist called "Ishky," working with Stamen Design, for the 2012 Zero1 Biennial.
There's a video of some of the writing going down after the jump, which, if I had anything to do with it, would have read 3.1415PEN15. "You love those things." They're so weird!
Hit the jump for a couple more shots and a video of the skytyping in action.
