Phillips' $60 Light Bulb Is Supposed To Last 20 Years

phillips-20-year-bulb.jpg

This is the Phillips' latest award-winning LED light bulb, a 10-watter that produces the light equivalent (and warm glow) of a 60-watt incandescent and is rated to last 20-years at 4-hours/use a day. Will we even be using light bulbs in 20 years? No, we will not. The world isn't gonna last that long and heaven glows. Plus there are always fires in hell. The bulb will retail for $60, but rebates are expected to subsidize the cost down to around $20. So, being the intrepid reporter that I am, I went to Phillip's official site and I saw this:

LOLOL @ "Be the first". OMG dude, did you hear -- I got Phillips' new energy efficient light bulbs! Wanna come over and check them out? The light they put out is like, soooooo f***ing natural. Plus I'm saving a fortune in electricity! "Your life depresses me." SAME. I almost drove my car off a cliff on the way home.

Thanks to Evil Ares, who's so evil he just replaced all the lightbulbs in his house with burning coal.

This is the conceptual AIRE mask. The idea is that you just strap it to your face and charge your iPhone simply by breathing. The Hannibal Lector look is just an added bonus! No word if breathing heavy like a f***ing creeper makes it charge any faster. The AIRE mask is a co... / Continue →

Seen here trying to steal my soul with her stare, a Sony employee demonstrates a new "biological" battery capable of turning cellulose into glucose into energy efficiently enough to power an MP3 player. Me? I'm still cool recharging mine via USB, but what do I know? (SPOILER... / Continue →

The Gaon Street Lamp was designed by Haneum Lee to turn trash into treasure. If light is treasure, which it's not. So I have no idea why I said that. Besides I'm awesome and I meant it. the Gaon street light/wastebasket concept composts biodegradable waste and uses the meth... / Continue →

I ordered 3 LED bulbs from China 2 years ago for 6-7$ and they still work fine.

  • The reporter that you are, couldn't you have checked that the box name says PhiLips instead of PhiLLips :-).

    suck it Phoebus cartel!

I'll stick with my buddy the LEDs, they're nifty, fun, and lasts quite a long time.

  • So this is nothing special at 4 hours a day for 20 years it comes out to be 29,220 hours. There are LED light bulbs on the market that are projected to last 50,000 hours
(it's projected because it takes forever for them to die even if you run it all day) .  I would never buy this LED bulb because there are betters ones out there, but in the end its about saving energy and the planet.

  • So do they do it in a bayonet cap or just an Edison screw?

  • How about those old light bulbs that would last 50-100, oh yea, the stopped making them

  • 60 watts?  i always go for 90 or the full 100. no less.

  • Award winning is such a rich distinction, but seeing how as they were apparently the only ones who entered the contest thus the only ones who could possibly have won the award, the praise is a bit hollow, me thinks.
