World's New Hottest Pepper (Will Melt Your O-Ring)

February 22, 2012

Look out, Naga Viper chilli, there's a new hottest pepper in town -- the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion Pepper. How hot is it? *touches butt, makes 'tsssssssss' sound* Even hotter than that if you can believe it. "That was ice-cold." But I've been working out!

The team planted 125 plants of the hottest known varieties--the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion, the Trinidad Scorpion, the 7-pot, the Chocolate 7-pot and the previous world record holder, the Bhut Jolokia. Once ripe, several peppers from each type were harvested, dried and ground to a powder. From that powder, the team extracted capsaicinoids (the compounds that give peppers their heat) and rated them. The Trinidad Moruga Scorpion averaged 1.2 million SHU with some individual fruits measuring a face-melting two million-plus SHU.

These peppers are so hot that the team went through multiple sets of gloves during the harvest because the Scorpion's capsaicin, "kept penetrating the latex and soaking into the skin on our hands. That has never happened to me before," said senior research specialist Danise Coon.

Damn, the previous record holder (the Naga Viper) topped out at ~1.4-million SHU and was strong enough to strip paint AND buttholes. And this one gets up to 2-million? I bet it could strip a person naked and set their nipples ablaze. I must have one. "Can I call you Volcano Nips afterwards?" NO. You will address me as Atomic Firetits and *slap* MY EYES ARE UP HERE, PERVERT.

The 2 Million SHU Trinidad Moruga Scorpion Pepper Is the World's Hottest [gizmodo]

Thanks to Scotty, who claims he once ate a whole ghost pepper and felt like he was about to die. Pfft, I always feel like I'm about to die.

True this article is very good :) Nice work ! It's inspired me to write big article about hottest peppers in the world . What do you think ?

  • Kellie M ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

The Trinidad Moruga is no longer the hottest pepper. The hottest pepper is the Carolina Reaper at 2,200,000 SHU.

  • CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I MUST EAT ONE!

  • What's the point of making food you can't eat?

  • Guest

Would it be inhumane to use the juices o' these peppers for pepper spray?

  • I just wanna see a video of some dude eating it.

  • A

I don't really comment much but this has to be said: Welcome back Original GW!

  • Chris Vigil

The previous record holder was the Trinidad Scorpion Butch T pepper not the Naga Viper. The Naga Viper ranks at about 1.4 million SHU while the Butch T is ranked at about 1.5 million SHU. Still the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion blows them both out of the water (or fire as it may be).

Will melt you're o-ring hahaha! hahaha! lol! Human Flame Thrower Combustible!!! Hahaha!

  • CaptainGuntu

At what point do you just say it's inedible/toxic?

  • JAM

I dont know, but once you pass that 1.1Million SHU, you need speciall gear just to handle them...

  • The Bhut Jolokia(aka Naga Viper) IS the Ghost Pepper/Chili.

  • JAM

So the bhut jolokia and naga viper are the same? Always thought they were different

  • Emmitt Morgans

Yeah... and this pepper is even hotter.  That's pretty much the point of the article...

  • Emmitt Morgans

Ah, that's nothing... pass the pure capsaicin!!! (gimme 16 million SHU or BUST!)

  • DarkRyNo

OMG the scale at how hot these things are getting is becoming insanely high!

  • n_a_a_s

THAT LOOKS exactly like what my balls do when I eat hot peppers, maybe a little smaller but definitely the same color

  • Eric Webster

Where's the ghost pepper on this scale?

Now I want a YouTube video of some moron attempting to eat one of these.

  • Leonidas Argidisouvlaki

Been done years ago already... search Youtube for "hippy seed company".

  • Emmitt Morgans

Ghost peppers are roughly 1 million Scoville units (or SHU)... I knew watching Man vs. Food would come in handy at some point!
