Oct 7 2010New Door Helps Prevent Injury During Quakes

earthquake-door.jpg

Earthquakes: they're scary. Almost as scary as tornadoes. Did you know in the event of an earthquake you're supposed to stand in a doorway? I didn't. I thought you were supposed to stop drop and roll. OMG --I think my teacher was trying to kill me. Eff you Miss Gardner! Hag-bag!

In anticipation of a 7.6 magnitude earthquake possibly hitting the city of Istanbul by 2030, an MA design student named Younghwa Lee from Kingston's University has designed a special kind of door that protects residents from falling quake debris. Designed to ensure safety and reduce injury or death, the door folds horizontally in the middle, while the bottom part remains braced against the floor for support.

The door frame has a built-in cabinet that contains a wind-up flashlight, containers of drinking water and medical supplies to ensure immediate medical aid before medics arrive in case of injury.

Smart thinking, Younghwa. Granted nobody is gonna be thinking clear enough to actually use one in the event of an earthquake ("EARTHQUAKE -- Fold the doors, fold the doors!") but smart thinking nonetheless. Also smart thinking: hang-gliding out the nearest window. "But my office is underground." Ouch.

Knock knock.
Who's there?
An earthquake.
An earthqua-- GAAAAHH!

Specially designed door shelters people against falling earthquake debris [thedesignblog]

Thanks to Matt, who just cries in the bathtub like a normal person. With or without bubbles?

that door looks specifically designed to fold up under load and crush the poor bastard flat.

No thanks, I'll just continue to live in a non-earthquake risk zone instead.

@1 Lol, Kansas.

We were told NOT to stand in the doorway because the doors could swing and slam crushing the bones in your fingers or throwing you into harms way.

In a terrible earthquake...just die. That's it. The longer you hold out the more you suffer.

GW, you better get some of these at your apartment. Not for earthquakes but for you're drunk, lose your keys and need to break in.

Is that the same door they use in Korean elevators?

HE BROKE THE DAMN DOOR!!!

Haha, looks like if you could drop few tons on top of that door, the door handle would puncture your skull :D

Although we don't have earthquakes here, everybody knows that in case of earthquake you should stand within doorframe.. not beneath doors

@HektikLyfe is right. We stopped teaching the "get in the door" method of earthquake sheltering on because the door isn't actually stronger than other parts of a modern building and the finger amputation risk. Just drop, cover and hold on.

@Mark- I don't know where you grew up that doesn't teach the doorway method but in any building the doorway is one of the strongest structural areas. And speaking from experience, if you aren't capable of standing in a doorway AND holding the door open during any typical, non 2012, earthquake then yes you should save your fingers, curl up on the floor and begin questioning your hand-eye coordination

what kind of debris are we talking about, here? i mean, because nobody puts anything over doorways in the first place, this product isn't really doing a whole lot. if we are talking about a collapse of the roof above you, well, then i think you are just plain out of luck and this door is only going to add to the debris squishing you like a pancake.

Just woke up to another earthquake this morning (4.4). Am currently living in very active earthquake zone, but what are you gonna do? Having recently gone through a 7.1 in Christchurch, New Zealand I can say I wouldn't go near that door during an earthquake. Nor any other time. Here's what is happening where I am: http://weeklycoitus.co.nz/?p=1586

the most danger place to be is in airplane becaus the quake will shake the wings off and you will crash like on that tv show

the safest place is the beach because the waves smooth the quake

They should paint the doorway to look like a big wooden soldier, because it reminds me of a nutcracker.

Design student. Not an engineer.

Door also folds out to become coffin lid!

Standing in a doorway in an earthquake is foolish and deadly. The problem is when the wall collapses and you can be chopped in the scissors effect of the door frame collapsing in on itself. Look at statistics of those bodies pulled from collapsed buildings… If you stand in doorways and live, it wasn’t because the doorway saved you, you just got very lucky. Best advice, get BESIDE a substantial bit of furniture. A void develops beside it, even if it collapses a bit itself, and that is where you want to be.

stupid

It's funny how people totally subconsciously spin scenarios in the direction that supports their point of view, or against the other.

The doorway will collapse...the table won't. Never mind that a doorway is a structure very similar to a table in construction.

I think I'd rather be in the doorway, than under the table that fell two stories:

That is pretty damn stupid if you ask me. Yeah, let's encourage people to make a human barricade in front of what might be their only way of escape. I can see it all now...................

*Earth is quaking* "Hurry everyone! Run for the door!! It is our only way of getting out al..... DAMMIT BOB!! GET THE HELL OUT OF THE DOORWAY!!!"

Because Bob cowered under the special door like a pussy, everyone in the office died. THE END. True story.

I'm going to kick in soooooo many of these..

Louis of http://aprettyage.blogspot.com/

that shit looks like its made of cardboard. lol asians....

@12
wtf was there another aftershock this morning? I didn't even feel it. I don't really notice anything under a 4.5 anymore because I live next to a bus route.

Doors specifically made so you only have to ram it once with your motorized wheelchair before falling to your death in an elevator shaft.

These guys worked fast.

Beastman AIDS @22

A couple of them. 4.4 and 4.1, about 6 minutes between each one. A couple of cracks bigger in our house but nothing serious. Since then everything has been sweet-as. Maybe we'll get a good night's sleep tonight?

@19 obviously those office workers could have just walked around the door, it's in the middle of a white empty room, did you not see the picture?

Standing under the door frame USED to be true. Nowadays our door frames tend to be just as weak as the rest of the house so you're to helping anything much.

I'm a Californian, 7.6 is nothing! Bring it on! But yeah, I agree, and earthquake is cool enough without getting guillotined by your "safety" door.

why not just go outside?

i guess i don't get it.

however i'm in the midwest and when the tornado sirens go i always run outside to see it

Nice try, but I don’t think I would trust it for two reasons. My fist reason is if you push it open it could fold when I don’t want it to and also for safety. My second reason is for a scarcity, it could make it easier for an intruder to brake in. If you want to leave me a message you can see me on my website at http://afn.me/af
