Jul 2 2009You Have Got To Be Kidding Me: Sears Tower Unveils Glass Balconies on 103rd Floor

no 1.jpg

The Sears Tower opened "The Ledge" to the public today. The Ledge is a 4-foot glass balcony that's suspended 1,353 feet above the ground on the 103rd floor. It provides a panoramic view of Chicago, provided the walls aren't covered in accidents. Fun fact: urine spilled from the 103rd floor can break concrete on the sidewalk below.* And not just if you drank a jackhammer, but it helps.

*No not really, stop emailing me.

Hit the jump for a couple more of the NO I AM NOT AFRAID OF HEIGHTS.

i live in chicago and i wouldnt go up there

The CN Tower in Toronto, Canada already has something like this. I went to see it when I was in grade seven, and never quite got over it...

FIRST!!!

AND HOLY CRAP!!!

While the floor makes for some cool pictures, I would never go up there. I'd pee my pants. I can't even look over the railing on the 2nd floor of the mall.

The glass floor in the CN Tower wouldnt be nearly as awesome as this. This is up higher, and the walls are also glass, thats awesome!

Is there a posted weight limit?

Has Oprah and her high heeled shoes dare to test the engineering?

@4. I hope you die. How do you think you are first when there is a 3 minute time lapse between the actual first comment, and your comment. You would have seen the first comment as you were typing yours, so I think you should die!

Is this what women mean when they complain about glass ceilings?

i think it'd be funny to see a female window washer use those suction cup hand grips to hold herself underneath the balcony...

...and flash her cooze @ little kids.

102nd floor balcony up-skirt advantage!

All of a sudden, this balcony seems like a great idea!

Oh-lay!

First?

no thanks.
build me a underwater balcony and we'll talk.

thirst!

BURST!

Curse!

yea I went to that CN tower glass floor back in the day aswell.
Just thinkin about gives me the willys.
These pictures have a similar effect on my legs.

Rehearsed!

@7
In the Yahoo.com article, it says it can hold 5 tons. So it will take more than Opera in stilettos to break it. Now if Opera and Rosie O'Donnel were in heels on "the ledge"......................... that could be dangerous LOL!!!!

to number 6... The CN tower glass floor is MUCH higher than the glass floor in Chicago. I work at the CN tower and can tell you 100% that it is much higher. Much safer looking too, by those pictures, haha

I beat you to it

http://fdsy.blogspot.com/2009/07/sears-tower-gets-glass-balcony.html

@6 the cn tower is ~25% taller. it just doesn't usually get mentioned because it doesn't have floors all the way up.

I think i see my dad...

It's not the Sears Tower anymore. It's the WILLIS TOWER.

But anyone who lives in Illinois is smart enough not to call it that...

FAKE!!!!

This is a complete photoshop job. You can tell its a fake because the shadow's are all wrong.

This is exactly like that scene int he movie Never Back Down where Max runs into his dealers house with an overdosing Baja. The dealer's wife prepares an adrenaline shot, and they talk about how to administer a shot to the heart. Max asks if he needs to do it 3 times and then on the count of 3 pokes her deep in the chest and she wakes up. Baja was so happy to be alive she told Max a bad joke, and promised to never mention this to anyone.

@AdamYYZ - are you retarded?? the CN tower is the highest free standing tower in the world. yeesh. Americans... <_<
this is such a lame rip-off

Hey Daisy,

I think I can see you're homo from up here.

P.S. You suck.

FAKE!!!!

FIRST!!!

@jessica.....damn right, thats like calling Wrigley field :sprint cellular field or when Marshal Fields was bought out by Macys,and now nobody shops there, you can't fight tradition in chicago.

perfect place to have sex while watching my obese boyfriend crying...
they're such wimps... i hated the CN Tower it was just a little space in the floor, this is... woooo way better...

poor birds btw...

@26 - You don't know what your talking about. First of all the CNN tower isn't free. When I went, I had to pay to stand there. They also made me wait in line.

Its impossible to compare it to the Sears tower because in the US we use feet, and in canadia they use the metric system. so because the conversion isover 3 to one the american building needs to be 3 times as tall just to be even.

Interesting true story, the CNN tower got its name because thats where CNN has their international broadcast antennas.

cn tower is not considered a building, its a tower or spire/antenna, skyscraper.com... the burj in Dubai is thee tallest BUILDING in the world. get a clue idiot.

Never back down movie sucks so therefore Daisy Sucks Worst troll on the planet.

I watched the Blue Jays play in the CN tower. Since you're right over the stadium.

Seriously, I might have nightmares about this tonight. Better not eat any cheese to make it worse.

First.

ITS A TRAP!

I'm going to stand underneath it with binoculars and look up skirts! YEOW!!

Oh Daisy...

Daisy is a staple item round here. Kinda like the dude from cheers with a mustache who never left the bar... what was his name??

Cliff! (Thank you wikipedia) Anywho. Daisy comes around and has her ridiculous comment but dammit, how I take it for granted. I'd be sad the day she doesn't leave the comment.

so...they've had this at the grand canyon for a while.
this one is cool too, though.
that's GW. =]

The CN glass floor is 113 floors up. If anyone was ever there, i worked as one of the poindexters taking pictures of people on in with the camera on the roof.

Also, the best time to go is early in the morning, when you can hear the floor creak. Really helps your breakfast go down...

That balcony looks awesome!

comment about the piss breaking the floor is BS....does rain break concrete when it falls from thousands of feet?....ahem....no

a human body probably wouldn't break the floor either, unless it was thin enough and had an airgap underneath it

@33

He never said getting into CN Tower is free. CN Tower is a FREE-STANDING Tower, which means the tower is not supported by anything. He never said anything about money.

There's something called measurement converters to convert the Imperial system to Metric system. By the way, CN Tower is 1815 feet and the Sears Tower is about 1450 feet.

It's called Canada's National Tower (CN Tower), not CNN Tower.

YOU don't know what you're talking about.

@45 - Get your facts straight before you make an internet ass of yourself.

The CNN tower is supported by the canadian government, rents of the various businesses it holds, such as the restaurant, and the fees for the antennas such as CNN which the tower is named after. Tourism is also factored into the support of the tower, and nobody gets in free. I have no idea where you get that idea.

This isn't a communist country like russia. Go back there and take your crazy ideas with you.

I could not stand bneing on this, my hands and feet wpould sweat intensely from being on it, even looking at the pic makes them sweat!

Quick everyone, we're going to see how many people it takes to break the glass floor.

@25

what shadows? it's glass!

@Bernard Fleming
LOL. Thanks for the laugh. I'm guessing you are joking. Lol, CNN tower in "Canadia". good one. If you're not joking... then DEAR GOD!

jlkhgfdcgvbhjnkliju

@Bernard Fleming

Okay. Nobody said going to CN Tower was free. I don't get where you got that idea from. Comment 26 said CN Tower is a FREE-STANDING TOWER, not entering CN Tower for free.

CN Tower doesnt even broadcast CNN. It got the name from the Canadian National Railway.

By the way, Russia isn't a Communist country. Soviet Union collapsed years ago. I would understand if you said "Go Back to Communist North Korea."

Oh, when i said "not supported by anything", I meant in terms of structural support, not economical support.

Two words. F*** THAT.

Yes, I had sex on one of these - and no not alone.

I also heard today our stupid city was changing its name to the Willis tower, why? (If this was already discussed I haven't read all the comments yet sorry)

@Bernard Fleming; Are you Canadian?
'Cause if you are, you're making us look bad, stfu.

@Ivan your crazy. I don't follow you're argument, and think your making it up.

@Bernard Fleming,
I don't usually speak negativity on the internet, but you're an idiot.
It was never called the CNN tower, it's the CN tower.

45 / Ivan said it all, kudos to you, man.

I doubt he's from Canada if he called it Canadia. Just saying.

How much you wanna bet, one good sneeze and everyone falls to their deaths!...

@ MJ Jones and Ivan - are you the same person? There's a village in russia thats missing an idiot, and wants to know when you'll be home.

Its a WELL KNOWN FACT that the CNN tower was built by Ted Turner to hold the broadcast antennas for CNN News Network. Ted Turner already had a station in atlanta and at the time needed to build it outside of America to remain within FCC regulations.

This is common knowledge, why are you so insistent to disput it?

It's funny. I can tell you're being sarcastic in your arguments. Haha, nice one Bernard Fleming.

Tokyo Tower did it first

If you fall down can you sue?

i really wanna go in that i live in chicago so i just might

Hi. I'm Bernard Fleming.

LAST!!!

This shits making my balls tingle just looking at these pics

NONONONONONONONO!! NEVER! zomg.... someone's going to drop a spark plug chip up there and everyone is going to fall to their freakin' doom.

I just did the math and if the glass were to break and you were to fall... you'd have about 8 seconds to contemplate the view and the bad decisions you've made in your life before you hit the ground at roughly 120 mph.

Melbourne has this already on the Eureka Tower for about 2 years now. Currently the world's tallest residential tower

I'll wait under.

Oh gals, that 's the best ever view you might ever have to see, go there ! wear skirts !

Oh man now I'm going to have go back to the US just to see this (I'm in Australia). Yeah, any excuse for another holiday over there ;)

I did the Skywalk at the Grand Canyon and it was awesome. The CN Tower in Toronto was ok too but we did it at night so couldn't see a great deal.

I love heights! Its such a thrill.

F that S

Ok guys, just to clear up a few CN tower facts,

The glass floor and outdoor observation deck are at 1,122 ft. The Sears tower has one at 1,353 ft. "Floor" count is completely irrelevant in comparing height.

And the CN Tower is no longer the worlds tallest freestanding structure. The Burj Dubai holds that title.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CN_Tower

That is evil and wrong. It's given me vertigo and I'm thousands of miles away.

"Fun fact: urine spilled from the 103rd floor can break concrete on the sidewalk below. And not just if you drank a jackhammer, but it helps."
That is nonsense: than rain would also break it. How could someone write down something so obviously stupid...

@78

the rain does break concrete. and furthermore, eat my shorts.

first.

lol I would be afraid of that.

http://akumablaze.mybrute.com

eh,, ancient eskimos did this atop theirsnow pyramids using ice, so it's really not a new idea.

lol at people calling it the CNN tower.

Urine would break concrete from that high up? so i guess rain is like an atomic bomb hit in Chicago then?

Man it'd be cool to pee off there....

why the fûck are you arguing about something as stupid as peeing off a god damn building & the idea that it could 'break concrete'? ......dipshits

Scary!

HEY...
HEY...
GW !

IN THE INFO YOU WROTE "suspended 1,353 above the ground"

PLEASE SPECIFY THE UNIT GOD DAMN IT...
people nowaday...

I personally have been in the CN Tower in Toronto, On Canada. So this isn't anything new to me.

@23... hahahaha so good!

Daisy - you wouldn't know if something was real even it straddled your pretty little face and rubbed off on you..

Does anyone remember the skywalk tragedy in Kansas City? Imagine if that happened 103 floors up....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyatt_Regency_walkway_collapse

http://www.destinationgrandcanyon.com/skywalk.html

this is a good way to phrank a suicidal person who wants to do a cliche drop from a building. haha

I only read the comments for you Daisy. If i felt like the naysayers were worth the time/effort I would explain to them that you probably know Never Back Down is a horrible movie.. almost funny.. like "Taken".. and that its so cliche it may as well be ripping off other great classics.. like, oh.. i dont know. "Pulp Fiction"... I would also tell them, if this is you're first time to post on Geekologie you're definitely not allowed to talk smack about anyone else.. Because if they had been posting here for a while like some of us other LOYAL READERS, they would probably notice you are as Gabe so accurately pointed out, A STAPLE of the site. i might even direct them to here: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/humor and here: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sarcasm where they might find the definition of the words "Humor" and "Sarcasm" (respictively) finally.. i would mention something about respect. and how nobody respects you when take stabs at our beloved Daisy.

but thats just if i felt like it needed to be done.. but it probably doesn't.. because most of us here are pretty intelligent, and actually understand the difference between misinformation and hyperbole.. i love you.

@94 - http://tinyurl.com/ldtxm9

that'd scare me sh*tless. freaks me out just seeing a child leaning so casually on the glass wall. no sense of self preservation there.

@33
Bahaha, it's called the CN Tower, not CNN. Short form for "Canadian National Tower"
Also, saying the Sears tower has to be 3 times as big? Seriously?....

@97 - I fail to see whats so funny.

Its impossible to compare the CNN tower to the Sears tower because in the US we use feet, and in canadia they use the metric system. so because the conversion is over 3 to one the american building needs to be 3 times as tall just to be even.

Interesting true story, the CNN tower got its name because thats where CNN has their international broadcast antennas.

Your as silly as the guy who said the railroad ran up there.

@94 / Matty

When you talk about regulars, you're obviously talking about people who are "so" regular that they ONLY know the site since daisy has been here. That makes your reference of posting for "a while," kinda moot. Let's just say, it's possible that some of us were regular readers and contributors before Daisy began this crusade of unintelligent repetitious drivel. In fact, I remember the exact article in which Daisy began, and why. As a "staple," to the site, I'm assuming without looking into the archives you know when and why as well. I was quickly became annoyed at the situation way back then, as were most of the contributors at that time at this tiresome gag. So we'll take stabs at your beloved "Daisy," all we damn well please. If Daisy chooses not to defend himself then that's his problem.

But I suppose it's all out of "respict...."
....You racist.

P.S. Daisy still sucks.

100th.

I like your sentiments @Joker Boy - the Americans have done it again! but glasss would also make me wanna crap my pants! they should now build a glass-bottomed car, it will be fun!

@98
In case you didn't catch, I was just imitating what a good third of these comments were about.
Probably because I like to fit in.

The Shanghai WFC, has the same, bigger and much much much more higher... that's just scary, all the way is transparant glass..

Why must everyone copy the greatness of things in Melbourne.

Our sky deck was the first, and it shits all over that tower. It blacks out and then suddenly goes normal and you slightly shi t yourself cos you're in the middle of the air. It's great.

p.s. http://www.eurekaskydeck.com.au/the-edge.asp

p.p.s. Come to Melbourne.

There's also one in Arizona. View on the gran Canyon. No kidding!
Scaaaary....

i'd still be scared, i don't care how much it can hold!

Awesome. Can't wait to do it. I also want to go to the Grand Canyon & go out on the glass horse shoe, 4,000 ft off the ground. Of course, I'll be crawling my way off crying & screaming like a baby the whole time.

Meh, big whoop. The CN tower has had one of those for decades.

Melbourne has a lot of great attractions.

In response to 25/28

Are you stupid where the hell are shadows supposed to come from. Its Cloudy

Those things you think are shadows are reflections.
