Mar 25 2009Stephen Colbert's Name On Space Station

iss colbert.jpg

Stephen Colbert just won a contest to have a new section of the International Space Station named after him. Unfortunately, those sticklers at NASA probably won't let it fly -- or orbit (ZING!).

The name "Colbert" beat out NASA's four suggested options in the space agency's effort to have the public help name the addition. The new room will be launched later this year.

NASA's mistake was allowing write-ins.

Colbert urged viewers of his Comedy Central show, "The Colbert Report" to write in his name - and they complied, with 230,539 votes. That clobbered Serenity, one of the NASA choices, by more than 40,000 votes.

NASA reserves the right to choose an appropriate name. Agency spokesman John Yembrick said NASA will decide in April, but will give top vote-getters "the most consideration."

Colbert sounds just as good as Serenity if you ask me. But they're both kind of weak. I was sort of hoping for something with a little more pizazz. Namely, "The GW's Intergalactic Boom Boom Room: where the beer is yesterday's urine and the lapdances are OUT OF THIS WORLD®".

Comic Colbert wins NASA space station name contest

Thanks to Pepe Le PEWPEW, who wrote in 'The PEW PEW Room', which I agree, does have a ring to it.

am i the only one that doesnt care for this guy?

Well the men come in these places
And the men are all the same
You dont look at their faces
And you dont ask their names
You dont think of them as human
You dont think of them at all
You keep your mind on the money
Keeping your eyes on the wall

I wanna make a million dollars
I wanna live out by the sea
Have a husband and some children
Yeah I guess I want a family
All the men come in these places
And the men are all the same
You dont look at their faces
And you dont ask their names
Repeat chorus twice

Deutschmarks or dollars
American express will nicely thank you
Let me loosen up your collar
Tell me do you wanna see me do the shimmy again
Repeat chorus

America can be unfair sometimes, one guy get's a space station named after him, another guy get's a false paternity ruling stacked against him, another guy get's innocently accused of child molestation or rape. If you want to watch a good documentary about America, check this out:

Dogville, one of the best movies I've ever seen. Right after the most extreme elemination challenge, MXC.

The Colbert section sounds way better than serenity wing

@4: Boring!
@Post: Boring,too!

@2 and 4... you second tard yourself then come back 2 comments later to spam? you are such a tool

@1... i agree, colbert is an aggervating douche. i have no idea what the appeal is

I don't care for Colbert.

Poop you're an idiot...

Can it be "Section Mongoose"? That's a good team name: The Mongooses!

I like Colbert, but Serenity would have been a lot better. Joss Whedon fans will agree with me. :-P

Serenity has my vote.
Firefly was a good series cut down in it's prime.

"Colbert" is sewage system in NASA laguage thingy.

You know what else has a ring to it?

My F*cking Ass.

Colbert is a douchenozzle.

This reminds me of the time that....well I'll cut this one short and just say I like Colbert, he's funny sometimes, and I LOVE his hair. George Fenneman still has him beat, but that's only natural.

13- Had I not been distracted by Colbert, I may have actually said that. Well done impersonator, well done.

Thank you #1 and #8, glad to know I'm not the only one who finds him irritating. Or the legions of people who think they're doing America a favor by sitting on the couch watching his show.

Is it that hard to find a name!? Galtacticus.

Why are they doing difficult about something what's simple!? Darth.

@16 you know you haven't established yourself on geekologie until you have an impersonator

@ 7 & 14, do you not get the joke? Colbert is an aggravating/annoying douche on purpose, that's the whole point. His entire persona is a satire.

@20. What are you trying to say?

I personally think he's an arrogant douche, regardless of whether or not his persona's intended to be satire. Or at least, he portrays himself as an arrogant douche. I find him mildly entertaining at his best, and rather aggravating at mediocre or worst.

Somebody at Gizmodo mentioned Galactica...I would so be on board for that name.

20- I've been impersonated quite a few times actually. This time it's funnier because they are using my old posting information to impersonate me instead of copying my current info =)

21- I get the joke, it's just not funny. His "persona" of being a douche was funny the first time, for about 3 minutes. Now he's dredged into the land of Mcfarland's "repeat said joke so many times it's not funny anymore, then keep doing it until it's funny again". The only difference - McFarland stops at some point.

Is it me or does everybody (atleast people who leave comments) do not like anybody? I feel like every comment sections of Geekologie, Superficial, and IWatchStuff, are always insanely negitive, as if it is cool to hate everyone....oh well still love the sites!

I'm all for Colbert, but wouldn't have a problem with Serenity either, given the Firefly association.

"After Node 3 is installed, the station’s crew will transfer over many of the Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) currently stored in various places around the station, including:

Water Recovery System (WRS) and Urine Processor Assembly (UPA), which take waste water from the station and purify it, separating any contaminants and making it safe for the crew to drink"

So here's my question: Why isn't it being named "The Costner"?

Colbert like everybody else on television these days is here to steal your soul with sparkling propaganda and politics. Naming a section of the space station after a man of "that sort of position" would just prove to me that society has lost all common sense, and there is no longer a point to have any hope for western civilization. Maybe NASA sees how inappropriate it is as well. At the same time the Firefly idea is nuts Joss Whedon's pretty cool but, he's still just another MEDIA STAR. Har-har-har! Name the section after somebody of intellectual importance not somebody that is just on TV delivering "witty" comments about the news. I don't care if he won.... If it was a contest what does that really tell you.... Is there not somebody "awesome" enough to name it after.
Crazy illogical rant over.

I say go for Tyson..... After all they do have the same birthday...... He should have entered whatever contest it was....

LAWL #29
*puts hand up for high five*

@22 god it's painful to watch that kid get kicked, great viral

I like the idea of Colbert more than I like him. The idea that many of his fans don't realize that he's actually mocking them (read: Republicans).

@10 Serenity don't make much sense for a spacestation. They should have gone with Dortmunder, the Alliance battle station. now thats some imposing sh*t. Still my vote is for "Death Star". Think about it, if america had the "Death Star" in space nobody would screw with us.

You all are just dumb liberal democrats!

Now if only Colbert could entice his viewing throng to recognize the brilliance that is Firefly, instead of shamelessly drawing as much attention to himself as possible by any means necessary.

@ 11.. I know.. :'( Serenity WAS a good choice. Damnit Colbert... I knew he had a secret deal with Fox. Can't stop the signal.

It should've been Xenu, what better way to pay tribute to our great Galactic Overlord!

@34. No one screws with us. We always mess with other people.

name it after ma name-that will be fun. I also guess Bush station will be fun
